I'm not runnin' for president, am I?
I'm not runnin' for president, but it
Could be innocent restraint
You think it's funny
I use my fist
I'm not trying to climb into a headline
It could be
Heaven sent me by mistake
I don't know why
I don't know why
You're pushing me
You're pushing me
You give me such a
Hard time, hard time
(Time... time)
Hard time
(Time... time)
You give me such a
Hard time, hard time,
Hard time, hard time
I'm not talking
Why debate?
It's no big secret my
My satisfaction
I just can't tell you why
It's satisfying you
Won't find the answers on
My face
I don't know why
I don't know why
You got to push
You got to push
You give me such a
Hard time, hard time
(Time... time)
Hard time
(Time... time)
You give me such a
Hard time, hard time,
Hard time, hard time
Ice in a vodka
A touch of lime
I'm not running for president, am I?
I'm not running for president, but it
Don't take a shot to see
I'm upset
I don't know why
I don't know why
I put up with
I put up with
You give me such a
Hard time, hard time
(Time... time)
Hard time
(Time... time)
You give me such a
Hard time, hard time
(Time... time)
Hard time
(Time... time)
You give me such a
Hard time, hard time
Hard time, hard time
In the song "President Am I" by Slow Children, the lyrics describe a person who is being pressured into politics, specifically running for the presidency. The singer tries to distance themselves from the idea of becoming president, stating that it could be innocent restraint. There's a lot of frustration in the lyrics, with the singer being pushed and given a hard time by those around them who are trying to force them into a position of power.
Throughout the song, the singer is trying to figure out why they're being pushed and what satisfaction others are getting out of it. They seem to be resisting the idea of power and are frustrated with the people pushing them. The singer also tries to find other ways to cope with the situation, like drinking vodka with lime, but ultimately feels upset and unable to understand why they're putting up with the pressure.
The lyrics don't explicitly state why the singer is being pushed into politics, but it's possible that the song is a commentary on the corrupt nature of political systems and how people are often forced into positions of power against their will. Overall, the lyrics are a mix of frustration, confusion, and resistance to authority.

@CrisWhetstone
Finally!!!!! I think I heard this a couple times on KROQ when I was too young to track it down. Then it disappeared with the late 80's corporate takeover at KROQ. I'm so glad to finally find this again!
For the music nerds out there, this was one of the very first projects produced by Stephen Hague who went on to produce lots of huge 80's albums and beyond.
