It's okay to have fear, as long as you're not scared of coming here
And in the middle of the night, just call if you wanna talk
'Cause you know that I want to talk, too
It's not bad of you to think of what might go wrong
But you can't blame me for secretly hoping that I'll prove you wrong
It's okay that I pray that you will miss your flight
It is brutal, it's brutal
Why can't you see?
It's brutal, it's brutal
Where have you been?
'Cause we're far apart, and my lonely heart
Finds it hard to get through the night
You pull me out of the dark, and now it's light
You pull me out of the dark, and now it's light
When we're out in the market and out on the streets
I've got a pocket full of problems and a pocket full of seeds
Hoping something good might grow out of this mistletoe
And I won't have to erase your memory
I like the way that our arguments stop when we fall asleep
And the way that your body feels when it's wrapped around me
And I'd like it if you made it to mine by Christmas Eve
So you can hold me
And we'll watch Christmas TV
It is brutal, it's brutal
Why can't you see?
It's brutal, it's brutal
Where have you been?
'Cause we're far apart, and my lonely heart
Finds it hard to get through the night
You pull me out of the dark, and now it's light
You pull me out of the dark, and now it's light
So come on home
Just come on home
Just come on home
Just come on home

The song "Christmas" by Slow Club speaks about the emotional complexity of relationships, particularly during the holiday season. The lyrics are an honest exploration of the anxiety and longing that one feels when they are far away from the person they love. The opening lines of the song, "It's okay to have scars, they will make you who you are. It's okay to have fear, as long as you're not scared of coming here," imply that the song might be addressed to someone who has had difficulty with intimacy or has been wounded in the past. The song stresses the importance of communication, reassuring the listener that it's okay to talk about one's fears and weaknesses. At the same time, the lyrics acknowledge that relationships can be complicated and frustrating, admitting that "It's not bad of you to think of what might go wrong. But you can't blame me for secretly hoping that I'll prove you wrong."
The chorus comprises the repeating lines "It is brutal, it's brutal. Why can't you see? It's brutal, it's brutal. Where have you been?" This is a bitterly questioning refrain that underlines how the distance between the singer and the person they're singing to is "brutal" in its emotional toll. The song then transitions into a meditation on the pleasures and comforts of being together β the warmth of a loved one's embrace, the way disputes dissolve when one falls asleep. The song expresses a hope that the two of them can spend Christmas together, watching Christmas TV and not having to erase each other from memory.
Overall, the lyrics to Slow Club's "Christmas" use the holiday season as a backdrop to explore the challenges and joys of loving someone who is far away. The song is a poignant reminder that the holidays can be both joyous and lonely β and that being with those we love can help us face even the darkest of times.
