If We're Still Alive
Slow Club Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Even thought about it ever before, oh
So now I'm sleeping until the evening
Then I'm into the night looking for the next dance floor
I thought you would let me, I thought maybe you would let me down,
You let me down now I'm looking for another while we're still around
I know I will be saved 'cause I always have believed
And there's a city that will heal me and help me
And help me clear the lumps out of my throat
I think that next summer, if we're still alive, you should try
We should try to jump into some water and focus on getting high
Fill your head with regretful space and leave it in that older place
Photographic memory is patchy grays, early rays and I'm OK
I'm OK, I'm not waiting for another will we're still alive
If we're still alive
The lyrics of Slow Club's song If We're Still Alive are rich with emotion and convey a sense of longing and missed opportunities. The opening lines of the song speak to the lack of communication between the two individuals in the relationship, and the fact that they never talked about the impending breakup. The singer of the song tries to console themselves by sleeping through the day, but come evening, they search for the next dance floor. This line, in particular, could be interpreted as a metaphor for trying to keep moving forward despite the pain of the breakup.
The chorus then acknowledges the disappointment and hurt felt as a result of the other's actions, but the singer has always believed that there is something more, and that they will be saved. The next verse provides a glimmer of hope, as the singer imagines a city that will help them heal, and suggests that the two should jump into some water next summer, with a focus on getting high. The final lines of the song are almost like a mantra, as the singer reassures themselves that they are okay, and that they are not waiting for someone else to help them live their life.
All in all, If We're Still Alive is a beautiful mediation on the aftermath of a relationship, and the difficulty of moving on. The lyrics are raw and emotional, and the melody perfectly captures the sense of longing and regret that runs throughout the song.
