Never Look Back
Slow Club Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Trying to bring him back to life
But the diamonds of the morning
Bribing open both eyes
Gone before you had to worry
Gone before you ever had to try
Now you're half a memory
But you had to go, but if you'd stayed
I'd have come around to hold your hand
Till the marching band had played
And now we'll never, we'll never look back
No, I'll never look back
Baby brother in the picture frame
We had all the time we were allowed
Now we love if we knew your name
We'd shout it out loud and
If you want it, welcome and get it
The first stanza of this song by Slow Club seems to describe a situation where the singer’s brother is in the next room and the singer is trying to revive him. The diamonds of the morning might represent hope or an awakening in his brother's eyes that the singer is desperately trying to see. However, it appears the brother has passed on - gone before he had a chance to live, before facing the struggles of life. The singer's mind is struggling to come to terms with the loss, as it feels like he is left with only half of the memory of his brother. The line "I'm not a trick blade by my mind" could suggest that the singer is not trying to deceive themselves about their brother's death, but that it is real and painful.
In the second verse, the singer is reminiscing about their brother and how they had all the time that was allowed. They wish they had known his name so they could shout it out loud, perhaps to keep his memory alive. The last line, "If you want it, welcome and get it", seems to suggest a call to action, almost like an invitation to remember the brother and the good times they shared.
Overall, "Never Look Back" seems to be a poignant and heartfelt tribute to a lost loved one, with a hint of regret at not having done more to preserve their memory. The song's slow and introspective tone further emphasizes the thoughtfulness and sadness behind the lyrics.

I'm very late to the party but for a band to make a song like this that's just visceral and brilliant and not to be together anymore is heart breaking.
