Two Cousins
Slow Club Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two lost cousins, and one new watch.
A chauffeur driven dream. Told us where to drop ?
All of our feelings there in the Porsche.
So no one could avoid, so no one could avoid.

Hold on, to where you're from.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
So let's say, I'll come another day.
And maybe, you'll understand.
I look into your eyes, you don't know who I am.

Did you scream it? Honey from the girl ?
My day just got misty and the purple's talking down.
Meetings in the desert, we want him to hear about.
We want him to hear about, but I guess it's too late now.

Hold on, to where you're from.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.

First it wasn't easy but seconds coming back.
I've got a bird upon my shoulder and look it's on my back.
I've got a bird upon my shoulder and look it's on my back.
I've got a bird upon my shoulder and look it's on my back.
I've got a bird upon my shoulder and look it's on my back.

Hold on, to where you're from.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
It's where your heart goes, when you're done.
So let's say, I'll come another day.
And maybe, you'll understand.
I look into your eyes, you don't know who I am.
I'll come another day.

And maybe, you'll understand.
I look into your eyes, you don't know who I am.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Slow Club's song Two Cousins seem to be about two people who are lost and trying to find their way back to their roots. The opening line, "Two lost cousins, and one new watch", may symbolize that the two people are searching for something new, but still trying to hold onto their past. The next line, "A chauffeur driven dream. Told us where to drop?", could mean that someone else is guiding them on this journey, and they're not sure where they're going.

As they're driving in the Porsche, they try to avoid their feelings by not talking about them. However, the chorus suggests that they need to hold onto where they come from because it's where their heart goes when they're done. When the singer says, "I look into your eyes, you don't know who I am", it could mean that the two people don't know each other as well as they used to, or that they've both changed since they last saw each other.

The second half of the song gets a bit more ambiguous. The line "did you scream it? Honey from the girl?" could mean anything from a fight they had in the car, to some kind of realization or epiphany. There's also a mention of meetings in the desert, which could symbolize a search for meaning in a barren landscape. The repetition of "I've got a bird upon my shoulder" could mean anything from a physical bird on the singer's shoulder, to a metaphorical weight they're carrying.

Overall, the song seems to be about a journey to find oneself, or to reconnect with someone from the past.

The names of the dancers should be included in the video description. Ryan François, Remy Kouakou are both awesome, inspiring dancers and great lindy-hop/swing instructors as well. Brilliant video!

I know it’s been 10 years since you made this comment citing the dancers… but thank you for this… Someone needs to make Remy a Wikipedia page too. You’ve inspired me to start checking out their work and I’m already few videos in. ❤️

@TitaniumTurbine Ten years already. Oh wow, I didn't realize this! I'm not sure how well lindy hop dancers are represented on wikipedia, but there's certainly a lot to be done & written. There's a very rich & fascinating history behind all the moves, and the dance in general. I'm glad my comment was useful to someone. :)

10 years ago I was listening to this song often on my walks around my college campus. Experienced major heartache, joy, escapism, and growth from then up until now. The feeling this song brings has remained the same.

Lesseroldertales

This has taken up so much meaning for me the further we are from its original release date. Time flies.

HelloDolly

Time sure does fly. I was 21 when this came out and that feels like forever ago

One of the most perfect songs ever written, that sole piano note persists throughout and then at the end it becomes that melancholic melody to finish the song. UTTER GENIUS.

DROPSHACK

Every Slow Club song is a brilliant song, such a good band!

This is easily some of the most beautiful dancing (Lindy Hop and Charleston I believe, but I’m no expert) I’ve ever seen. These men are absolutely amazing. Gorgeous moves, beautiful flow and style. If I could learn just one move half as well as these gents…. I’d forever be a proud man. It would be my dream to learn from them.

Really gentlemen, you are amazing. I look up to you.

Frederick Joseph

Still one of my favorite music videos of all time. Still watching in 2017.
