The soulful duo met in London at Lady Z’s Vibe Bar residency in 2002. Varano, who had been looking for a vocalist to record with his Puddu Varano and Los Chicharrons productions, invited the singer to guest on both records. The two hit it off in the studio and after a series of live dates ending with a landmark performance at Ruskilde Festival in the summer of the same year; the pair got together to form Slow Train. Their first collaboration Illegal Cargo was recorded in 3 weeks over a six months and was released in 2003 on Varano’s label Murena Records. The album was released in Europe, Asia and the US and enjoyed great success with underground hits ‘Naturally’, ‘In The Black Of Night’ and ‘Trail Of Dawn’

Trail of Dawn
Slow Train Soul Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lies upon the ground
And I get so lonely
Since you let me down
Well, I used to be so happy
Walking on these streets
Now there's just sadness
Everywhere I meet
Walk all over town
Sweet tears of sadness fallin' down
Keep lookin', baby
I won't be around
Blue trail of sorrow on the ground
Now when I had a dollar
You'd stick right by me
Now I've got nothin'
But blues for company
Well, I think I'll leave tomorrow
I'm tired of this old town
But it won't be hard to find me
If you look down on the ground
Start walkin', baby
Walk all over town
Sweet tears of sadness fallin' down
Keep lookin', baby
I won't be around
Blue trail of sorrow on the ground
The lyrics of Slow Train Soul's song "Trail of Dawn" tell the poignant story of heartbreak and loneliness. The opening lines set the scene with a blue trail of sorrow lying on the ground. The singer feels lonely and down since their partner let them down. They used to be happy walking on these streets, but now they're consumed by sadness everywhere they turn.
The tone of the song is somber and reflective as the singer talks about how things used to be when they had money, and their partner stuck by them. Now that they're alone, they feel nothing but blues for company. The singer decides that they're going to leave town the following day, they're tired of the same old heartache, but they know that they won't be hard to find if their partner looks down on the ground.
The song's lyrics are simple but powerful in their description of loneliness and heartbreak. The use of the blue trail of sorrow is a poignant metaphor for the singer's feelings, and the repetition of "Start walkin', baby/Walk all over town" creates a sense of finality as the singer tells their partner to keep looking as they won't be around.
