Country
Slowdive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She wakes up on her own
And opens her eyes
The sun tries to burn through the pain
She still feels inside

I've seen you fall apart
I know you wouldn't care
But I wish you were mine

She looks into his face
Just to be near him
And the clouds come round again
Nothings changed

I saw you for a lifetime
I know I shouldn't care
But I wish you were mine

And the rain keeps on falling
In my heart.

Overall Meaning

The song "Country" by Slowdive speaks to the pain of unrequited love and the longing for someone who may never reciprocate those feelings. The opening lines paint a picture of the singer waking up alone and struggling to overcome her pain. The sun serves as a reminder of a new day, but it can't burn away the hurt she feels inside. The second verse centers around the character looking at someone they desire, but unable to be with them. Though familiarity brings the singer close to their love interest, clouds form as they realize that nothing has changed, and their feelings may never be returned. Unfortunately, the end of the song only reinforces despair as rain continues to fall in the singer's heart.

Throughout the song, Slowdive creates an ambient and atmospheric soundscape, built upon dreamy guitar melodies and the gentle, airy vocals of singer Rachel Goswell. The band's formation began in Reading, Berkshire in 1989 when guitarist Neil Halstead formed a band called "Puzzled Panthers" with drummer Adrian Sell and bassist Nick Chaplin. However, the band changed their name to Slowdive and added Rachel Goswell on vocals and Ian McCutcheon on drums. Slowdive's music was categorized as part of the 'shoegazing' genre, which was so named because of the tendency of the performers to stare down at their pedals while they played.
