Slowdive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See you walking and I know shes my friend, again
Just the weight of the water drags me down, again
Guess I'll think of the water its my friend, oh yea
It's just the way that the water makes me feel again

Son of Sheba I saw him drown
Son of yellow I saw him drown
It's all I need yeah

See you walking and I know shes my friend, again
Just the weight of the water drags me down, again
Guess I'll think of the water its my friend, oh yea
It's just the way that the water makes me feel again

Son of Sheba I saw him drown

Son of yellow I saw him drown
It's all I need yeah

Overall Meaning

"Machine Gun" by Slowdive is a song that portrays a feeling of drowning both physically and emotionally. The song opens with the line "See you walking and I know sheโ€™s my friend, again", which could be interpreted as a friend helping the singer through a difficult time. The weight of the water is metaphorical, as it is pulling the singer down and representing the struggles and challenges that they are facing.

The chorus "Just the way that the water makes me feel again" emphasizes the relationship between the singer and water. It could represent the idea of being reborn or cleansed by water, but also the feeling of being overwhelmed and suffocated. The verses also mention "Son of Sheba" and "Son of Yellow" drowning, adding a layer of mystery to the lyrics, as it is unclear who they are and what the significance of their drownings is.

The overall feeling of "Machine Gun" is melancholic and heavy, with the lyrics hinting at the idea of being trapped in a cycle of pain and struggle. It is a reflection of the human experience and the difficulties we face in life, but also the hope that can be found through connection and support from others.

Now that Slowdive is releasing all of their songs officially on youtube, I love that they're choosing to allow comments. Most artists don't, which is a shame. The only reason why I come here to listen to music is learn of other people's experiences and opinions
