Players
Slum Village Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the 788
DDT'n, just like Jake The Snake
Actually we don't participate
But if you do then I'ma see you at your wake
Players
Don't let the drama fluctuate
I don't want 'em
I got em, we cooking steaks
Now what would we be at if we let you do that
We'd probably be laying on our backs
Players
Talking this and that
You want my opinion your shit was whack
I never would, play myself out like that
But umm, I guess that's where you at
Players

What I'ma do is like, uh
Call out your whole crew cause your crew likes to bite us
Y'all stick to freestyling cause y'all ain't no writers
Trying to be some players and can't play the game
See you sound the same and you claim to be
Something you ain't or won't be without S.V
Y'all need to be smacked open-handedly

I could give a fuck about this shit
You all up in my face over some ho shit
Just come out, you wanna be with my clique
You must know, really how wild I get
When I walk in the place saying (players) yes, yes
There's some people who really wanna see the S
Personally I could give a fuck less
Check your lady, she's a groupie ho
Opening her coochie hole, fuck that ho
Eye to eye, they doing the Devoe
When you front, it's inspirational
You, you, or you, or you, or you, or you

Yo, yo, yo
You wanna be some (players) and can't play this game
You sound the same and you claim to be
Something you ain't or won't be without S.V
Y'all need to be smacked open-handedly by these

Players
Talking this and that
You want my opinion your shit was whack
I never would, play myself out like that
But I guess that's where you at

You wanna be a player for me to hold you up
You think I really give a fuck

You, and you, and you, and you and your crew
You think you just some players

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the Slum Village song "Players" present an interesting view on the nature of players and their behavior. The song starts off with a reference to a particular wrestling move, the DDT, and how the members of the song do not "participate" but rather see the drama surrounding the move. The following lines use "Players" as a metaphor for people who engage in deceitful and manipulative behavior, with the chorus urging others not to let the drama fluctuate while also claiming that the players themselves will eventually meet their doom.

The second verse shifts focus onto a particular group of people who try to emulate the Slum Village members but fall short. Here, the song accuses them of not being able to write their own lyrics and falling back on freestyling. The song continues to admonish them for trying to sound like Slum Village but never being able to live up to their standards. The song finishes off with the chorus repeating the idea that these players will eventually meet their downfall.

Overall, the song is a commentary on the behavior of those who try to deceive and manipulate others, claiming status they haven't earned or living a dishonest lifestyle. It also highlights how such people are doomed to fail and meet their downfall eventually.

the original sample says "claire" but dilla flipped it to sound like "player". damn he was brilliant. sampling is alot harder than people think.

@Anonymous29785

I think it's more likely that he was just pitching the sample down anyway and it happened to sound like "player". Sampling is just as much about happy accidents as it is skill

@choadschlongski9025

just like how scratching records came about

@drifter402

That's your mind playing tricks on you. It's still saying Claire. If you don't know what it's supposed to be, especially with sampling changing the context and isolating parts, it's common to misunderstand the words.
