Buttermilk Pt. 1
Sly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You woke me up in the middle of the night
Lit a candle and we bathed in the light
You said you're scared of the city we're in
Want to make it better, but I can't begin to

Make it alright
Write another story, we're fine
We'll make it alright
We'll write another story, we're fine

You said you know that you're going nowhere
Know that you're going nowhere
Know that you're going nowhere
I'll follow you there
I'll follow you there

Losing patience with the circles we draw
Talking slow and now I'm seeing all my flaws
I'm having trouble being honest again
Put the bottle down and slowly begin to

Make it alright
Write another story, we're fine
We'll make it alright
We'll write another story, we're fine

I know that I'm going nowhere
Know that I'm going nowhere
Know that I'm going nowhere
Follow me there
I know that I'm going nowhere
Know that I'm going nowhere
Know that I'm going nowhere
You follow me there

Try to figure out how to say this
I'm losing my mind in these rages
I'm losing my mind in these pages
There's blood on my [?]
Get us back in time when we wasted
But I know whatever [?]
And all those fucking nights that I wasted
And all those fucking nights that I wasted

I believed in you, then you fell apart
You broke my trust, you broke my heart
Again
Again
One more [?]
Disintegrate before my eyes
Again
Again
Again

Waiting on your bloodlines
Waiting on your bloodlines
Again
How could you make me wait?
Draw a picture with your bloodlines

Picture with the bloodlines
A thousand words and then escape

Overall Meaning

In the beginning of the song, Sly is awakened by his partner in the middle of the night. They light a candle and have a deep conversation in which his partner expresses that they are scared of the city they are in and wants to make it better. However, they feel powerless to do so. Sly tries to console them by telling them that they will make it alright and write another story. Although they may feel like they are going nowhere, he is willing to follow them wherever they go. Yet, he confesses that he too feels lost and is having trouble being honest. Sly suggests that putting the bottle down would be a good place to start if they want to make things better.

As the conversation continues, Sly becomes frustrated with the circles in which they are talking. He realizes that he too has flaws and is having trouble being honest with himself. The repetition of the line "know that I'm going nowhere" reinforces the feeling of being lost and not knowing where to go. Nonetheless, they pledge to follow each other wherever they may lead.

In the final portion of the song, Sly reflects on how he is losing his mind and feels like he is wasting his time. He also expresses his disappointment and heartbreak in his partner who had broken his trust. The phrase "Again, again, one more" suggests that this might be a cycle that has repeated before. However, he still holds out hope that they can fix things and draw a picture with their bloodlines to signify their love and commitment to each other.
