Just Like a baby
Sly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just like a baby
Sometimes I cry
Just like a baby
I can feel it when
You lie to me
Just like a baby
I'll try if I can
Just like a baby
Just like a baby

Inside a little big man
Everything is new
Just like a baby
Come to find out
I'm a whole lot like
You, too
Just like a baby
See the thing it's growin'

Just like a baby
Blowin

Overall Meaning

Sly & The Family Stone's song "Just Like a Baby" talks about how people are vulnerable, emotional, and can be easily hurt in the same way as a baby. The lyrics suggest that the singer is aware of deceit and lies, and despite wanting to remain strong, they're impacted by it, just like a baby would. The comparison between a grown man and a baby is drawn throughout the song. According to the lyrics, although adults tend to act strong and independent, they can sometimes be just as vulnerable and sensitive as a baby. The lyrics suggest that we all have a vulnerable and fragile side, which can easily be affected by others.

The song's chorus says that the singer is just like a baby, with everything seeming new and fresh. The singer believes that they have an unexplored and mysterious side that's sensitive to deceit and lies. The baby metaphor also suggests that just like a baby learning its first steps, there are things to learn in life. The verses indicate that we all have a lot in common, even if we might not be aware of it. Overall, the song's message seems to be that we are all human and we should celebrate our emotions, rather than trying to suppress them.

Aww man, this used to be my jam back in da day. In fact the whole album. Senior 73'. I had forgotten all about this song. I literally used to lie on the floor with a speaker on each side of my head and listen to this. This song was neo-soul before neo soul.

Two points on this. Well maybe three. Sly was born in Texas and moved to the Bay Area as a child but grew up on the blues. Also Sly and his brother and sisters first started out singing gospel as did Larry Graham. Another point is Sly and The Family Stone were a huge influence on the gospel players who came after that era.

This is like adding ranch dressing to a piece of watermelon. That is what I call funky.
