Brothers Sly Stone and singer/guitarist Freddie Stone combined their bands (Sly & the Stoners and Freddie & the Stone Souls) at the end of 1966. Sly and Freddie Stone, trumpeter Cynthia Robinson, drummer Gregg Errico, saxophonist Jerry Martini, and bassist Larry Graham completed the original lineup; Sly and Freddie's sister, singer/keyboardist Rose Stone, joined within a year. This collective recorded five Top 10 hits and four groundbreaking albums, which greatly influenced the sound of American pop music, soul, R&B, funk, and hip hop music. In the preface of his 1998 book For the Record: Sly and the Family Stone: An Oral History, Joel Selvin sums up the importance of Sly & the Family Stone's influence on African American music by stating "there are two types of black music: black music before Sly Stone, and black music after Sly Stone". The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
During the early 1970s, the band switched to a grittier funk sound, which was as influential on the music industry as their earlier work. The band began to fall apart during this period because of drug abuse and ego clashes; consequently, the fortunes and reliability of the band deteriorated, leading to its dissolution in 1975. Sly Stone continued to record albums and tour with a new rotating lineup under the "Sly & the Family Stone" name from 1975 to 1983. In 1987, Sly Stone was arrested and sentenced for cocaine use, after which he went into effective retirement.

You caught me smilin' again
Hangin' loose 'cause you ain't used
To see me turned on
You caught me smilin' again
You caught me smilin' again
I'll be gone and it won't take you long
To climb a tree about me
You caught me smilin' again
You caught me smilin' again
I ain't down
I'll be around to carry on
You caught me smilin' again
You caught me smilin' again
In my pain, I'll be sane
To take your hand
The lyrics to "Smilin'" by Sly & The Family Stone reflect a sense of joy and contentment that comes with being in the presence of a loved one who brings happiness into one's life. The repeated refrain of "You caught me smilin' again" amplifies this sentiment and underscores the experience of the singer, who feels seen and recognized for their positive emotions. The first stanza sets the stage for the rest of the song, with the lines "Hangin' loose 'cause you ain't used / To see me turned on" conveying a sense of unexpected delight that comes with being in this person's presence.
In the second stanza, the lyrics take a slightly darker turn, with the singer anticipating their departure and the other person's potential reaction to it. The lines "I'll be gone and it won't take you long / To climb a tree about me" suggest a fear that the other person may become angry or upset once they are no longer around. Despite this, the singer remains positive, assuring the other person that they will continue to be present and carry on with their life. This is reinforced in the fourth stanza with the line "In my pain, I'll be sane / To take your hand", which speaks to the singer's ability to maintain composure and connection even in difficult times.
Overall, the lyrics to "Smilin'" reflect a sense of emotional openness and vulnerability, as well as a deep sense of connection between two people. The repeated refrain of "You caught me smilin' again" serves as a reminder of the power of joy and the importance of recognizing and celebrating positive emotions.
