Free Love
Smack Dab Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why'd you have to bum my high?
Came on like some other guy
I barely knew you
I saw right through you

Can't be bothered with the chains
Locked up tight"bored, restrained
Show me where
It says I have to care

My old lady has it right
We're together almost every night
Free Love

Dennis Wilson says "hello"
Sorry that he had to go
Bummed out and annoyed
That crazy surfer boy

All the dudes have big ideas
All the dogs are filled with fleas
I'm just getting high
Wasted on the morning sky

My old man has got it made

Never has to feel afraid
Free Love

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Why'd you have to bum my high?" immediately set the tone for the overall theme of Smack Dab's song, "Free Love". The singer feels like someone has invaded their personal space and brought them down from the euphoria they were experiencing. The following lines, "Came on like some other guy, I barely knew you, I saw right through you," suggest that this unwelcome intruder was someone who was not genuine and only wanted to take advantage of the singer's good time. The singer feels like they were able to easily see through this façade, indicating that they are perceptive and careful with their trust.

The second verse suggests a desire for freedom from societal norms and expectations. The phrase "Can't be bothered with the chains, locked up tight, bored, restrained" showcases the singer's determination to break free from what society deems a normal or acceptable lifestyle. They are looking for guidance on where it says that they have to conform and care about the things that don't matter. The chorus "My old lady has it right, We're together almost every night, Free Love" shows that the singer has found a counter-culture partner who shares the same values and beliefs.

The final verse references Dennis Wilson, who was the drummer of the Beach Boys and was known for his wild partying lifestyle. The line "That crazy surfer boy" suggests admiration and perhaps a desire to emulate a carefree and exciting lifestyle. The singer continues to reject societal expectations, pointing out that big ideas and social status mean nothing when everyone is flawed in their own way. The final line, "my old man has got it made, never has to feel afraid, Free Love" shows that the singer's family is also supportive of their alternative lifestyle and that they have found a sense of security and happiness in their choices.

I found my sister that was adopted back in 1945 through Ancestry. She never knew I existed. I found out about her when I was around 16 years old. I have been looking for her since 1968. It took 51 years , but I am so grateful.

There is something really extra special about this show that the hosts have gone through the same experience. It's full of heart and soul. Thanks for putting this together, TLC.

Well long lost family was a Britain show first and i guess it grew to popularity so TLC said. " Lets make an American version of it.'

This is beautiful. Rita had John's ankle bracelet & receiving blanket, plus that precious picture. His adoptive-Dad was not in favor of the meeting, because he didn't want an interruption of their family. Yet if she hadn't given birth to him & been forced to give him up, the Angelo family wouldn't have gotten the son they love.
As for Evelyn & Kristen - it was a natural meeting. They fit as if the 45 years hadn't existed. They look so much alike, Kristen should know how she'll look in 18 to 20 years plus Evelyn has grandchildren.
GOD BLESS to them & their families.
