Small Black started with a name and worked backwards: a housemate of singer/multi-instrumentalist Josh Kolenik came up with the moniker on a cold Portland, Oregon night. The name stuck when he returned to Long Island, New York and began collaborating with Ryan Heyner, an area musician and former member of the hardcore band Silent Majority who shared friends with Kolenik. The pair holed up in the attic of the beach house and surfboard shop Kolenik's uncle owned to record songs with vintage keyboards and samplers, spending late 2008 and early 2009 recording as Uncle Matt made surfboards underneath them.
Though Kolenik had played in several bands before Small Black, the mix of shoegaze and synth pop he and Heyner hit upon felt special, and the group's lineup was complete once bassist/guitarist Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin from Kolenik's previous band, Slowlands, joined to bolster production and fill out their live act. Small Black released their self-titled five-song EP on their own CassClub label in October 2009, and released the U.K. single "Despicable Dogs" as well as a video for that song featuring Uncle Matt soon after. Following their performances at that year’s CMJ Music Marathon, Small Black signed to Jagjaguwar Records, which reissued the band’s debut EP with two bonus tracks in 2010. That year, they also released a split single with the like-minded Washed Out, with whom they also toured. New Chain, the band's first full-length, boasted a slightly more polished sound that reflected their consistent touring as well as their interest in hip-hop and arrived in October 2010. In late 2011, the band offered the Moon Killer mixtape as a free download from their website. The collection of new material was built on samples ranging from Pere Ubu to Nicki Minaj and featured multiple drop-ins from Das Racist MC Heems as well as remixes from Star Slinger and Phonetag.
After spending much of 2012 on the road, Small Black returned with May 2013's Limits of Desire, a more sophisticated-sounding set influenced by Talk Talk and the Blue Nile. They covered the latter band's classic "Downtown Lights" on the following year's Real People EP, which had a more dancefloor-oriented style and featured vocals from Frankie Rose. Small Black's passion for sophisti-pop grew on October 2015's Best Blues. Recorded by the band in their Brooklyn home studio and mixed by Nicholas Vernhes at the Rare Book Room Studio, the album included contributions from trumpeter Darby Cicci of the Antlers and vocalist Kaede Ford. Soon after Best Blues' release, Kolenik's Uncle Matt passed away, and the memory of him inspired many of the songs on Small Black's fourth album. Arriving on 100% Electronica in April 2021, the reflective Cheap Dreams found the band returning from their hiatus with an extra dose of goth to their synth pop reveries. In 2023, Small Black looked back with a pair of archival releases. They commemorated the tenth anniversary of Limits of Desire with a deluxe edition of the album, and also issued a deluxe version of their debut EP that included previously unreleased songs from their early beach house sessions.

through plaster walls
I want to float
over The Bridge
head toward the lights
the ones I know
was certain I
now i'm out where I want to go
just further off the road
cnd it feels like it always does
Feels like it always was
LOW
Walking in the house alone
Pray on the ottoman
cmen for one
Locked in there just because
where there is only one
one is enough
I am nowhere
other than here
both the floors have
disappeared
now i'm out where I want to go
just further off the road
cnd it feels like it always does
cnd it feels like it always does
LOW
Walking in the house alone
Pray on the ottoman
cmen for one
Locked in there just because
where there is only one
one is enough
Walking in the house alone
Pray on the ottoman
cmen for one
Locked in there just because
where there is only one
one is enough
In "Duplex," Small Black explores themes of isolation, self-reflection, and emotional surrender, established through imagery that evokes a sense of yearning and a desire to transcend physical and mental barriers. The opening lines express a poignant desire to "dissolve" through "plaster walls," which symbolizes a wish to escape from the confines of reality and the pressures of the external world. The reference to "The Bridge" serves as a metaphor for transition or a point of connection, yet simultaneously represents a mental blockade that the singer feels unable to cross. This duality points to a conflict within the self—where the singer's aspirations to transcend limitations clash with an acute awareness of their diminishing grip on reality.
The lyrics further delve into feelings of uncertainty and confusion with phrases like "was certain I was losing it." The mention of "the lights" suggests not only guidance but also familiar points of hope or clarity that the singer feels slipping away. The transition from aspiration to feeling "further off the road" provides a vivid depiction of an ongoing search for direction in vain. Here, the concept of being "out" signals a potential freedom or escape, yet it is bittersweet as it also emphasizes the realization that what was sought may not offer the solace the singer desires. The cyclical reflection of “it feels like it always does” evokes a sense of inevitability in this loop of melancholic self-discovery, hinting at a familiarity with sadness that becomes as significant as joy for the singer.
The imagery of walking through a house alone contrasts sharply with the earlier longing for connection and transcendence, emphasizing a bleak solitude. The act of praying on the ottoman manifests a ritualistic attempt at seeking peace or reconciliation within oneself, while "amen for one" encapsulates the solitary nature of this practice. This duality of prayer—engaging with something greater while being isolated—illustrates an inner tension present in the human experience. The repeated statement "where there is only one, one is enough" can be interpreted as both a resignation to loneliness and an assertion of self-sufficiency. It suggests that while human connection appears less attainable, an acceptance of singularity can be a form of empowerment, illustrating the peace that can arise when one finds solace in their own company.
As the song progresses, the recurring motifs of disappearance and presence amplify the sense of existential questing. "I am nowhere other than here" signifies an acute awareness of the present moment, which contrasts with the earlier desires to escape or transcend, thus linking the physical and emotional worlds together and reflecting on the nature of existence. The mention of "both the floors have disappeared" reinforces the feeling of disorientation, presenting an image of a collapsing structure—both literal and metaphorical—that underlines a psychological state where the singer feels untethered from stability. Ultimately, "Duplex" encapsulates an emotional landscape rich with contradiction: a desire to be liberated intertwined with an acceptance of solitude, suggesting that perhaps true contentment lies not in seeking to escape, but in finding a way to coexist with one’s own reality.
