Small Brown Bike is a band from Marshall, Michigan that existed between 1996 and 2004 and reunited in 2009. The trademark of this four-piece is "double vocals" backed by melodies. Their sound is often identified as being similar to other post-hardcore bands such as Avail and Hot Water Music. The band name is derived from their working experience as bike mechanics.
Their last show was in 2004 at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago, after already agreeing to split up. Former members Mike Reed and Dan Jaquint later created the band LaSalle, with Reed's wife playing bass guitar.
Jeff, Mike and Ben started a new band with Nathan Ellis from The Casket Lottery called Able Baker Fox.
In 2009 the band got back together again and played a couple of reunion shows and released a 7inch with new songs. A new full length record "Fell & Found" was released in spring 2011 via No Idea Records.

What's Missing Is Dead
Small Brown Bike Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Everything streams by.
Everyone screams by.
On the trip back home,
I wasn't sure if I was going to make it.
We crush what's coming.
We can't recover.
Everything has made me bitter.
I coughed up a smile tonight.
I brought home a fake badge to wear around the house
And show my loved ones how much I try.
I've killed what's missing.
The pavement is peeling.
We've lost what's broken and saved each other.
The opening lines of Small Brown Bike's song "What's Missing Is Dead" evoke a sense of despair and hopelessness that permeates the entire track. The singer is crawling down the pavement, feeling overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of modern life rushing by. The use of the word "stream" suggests a relentless, unending flow, which the singer feels powerless to resist. The line "I wasn't sure if I was going to make it" hints at feelings of anxiety and a sense of imminent danger.
The second verse deepens the feeling of despair. The singer reflects on the destructive nature of humanity, how we "crush what's coming" and leave "what's empty" behind. This language suggests a disregard for life and a willingness to overlook suffering in pursuit of our own goals. The singer acknowledges that this has made them "bitter", but at the same time, they are trying to put on a brave face. The mention of the "fake badge" they bring home to show their loved ones suggests that they are trying to convince themselves and others that they are doing something worthwhile, even if deep down they feel powerless.
The final verse shifts the focus to a more positive note. The singer asserts that they have "killed what's missing", a line open to interpretation but perhaps suggesting that they have overcome some personal challenge or setback. The use of the phrase "we've lost what's broken and saved each other" is a hopeful sentiment, suggesting that despite the difficulties of life, there is still the possibility of connection and solidarity.
