Green Circles
Small Faces Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And with the rain a stranger came
His eyes were filled with love and pain
He eat and slept and darkness fell
And in his sleep his mind did tell of
Green circles, green circles

He dreamt of circles in the air
And you and I and everywhere
He wanted all the world to be
As free as he so they could see those
Green circles (circles of) green circles

His face was worn
The lines they told
The dust and patience of his load
As with the dawn he went his way
And with him went his love and pain
And green circles (circles of) green circles

Green circles, green circles, green circles
Green circles, green circles, green circles
Green circles, green circles, green circles

Green circles, (circles of)
Green circles, (circles of)
Green circles, (circles of)
Green circles, (circles of)
Green circles, (circles of)

Green circles, (circles of)
Green circles, (circles of)

Overall Meaning

The Small Faces' song "Green Circles" opens with the arrival of a stranger who brings love and pain with him, and the rain signals his entry. He eats and sleeps, and in his sleep, he dreams of circles in the air. He wants to see the entire world as free as he is so that people can see these circles of green. These lines depict the stranger's wish for universal freedom and the cyclical pattern of life depicted by the circles. The stranger has a worn face that tells of his hard work and patience because of his load of dust. As he leaves at dawn, he takes his love and pain with him, and the green circles remain as a symbol of his message of freedom, equality, and interconnectedness.

The song uses imagery effectively to help the listener understand the meaning behind the lyrics. The green circles that the stranger dreams of represent the cycle of life and the interconnectedness of all living things. The stranger's arrival with love and pain can symbolize the beauty and heartache that come with life. The presence of a stranger and his dream of green circles reminds us of the common bond shared by humanity.

The very end of this video sums up these guys perfectly, when Dave smiles as only he could at the camera. Musically imo very underrated at the time,it's only now getting on for 56+ years later when all their records still sound so fresh and enjoyable having stood the test of time do we realise just how good they were. Great entertainers, showmanship and stage presence, charm, charisma the lot, always thoroughly enjoying themselves, they never appeared to take themselves seriously.
Dave himself,is certainly up their when the list of the greatest front men is discussed,if not at the top.
