Hailing from Brisbane, the four-piece released their debut album, Beautiful Hum, on May 24th 2008. No less a tastemaker than Billboard magazine are touting the band’s hometown as one of the globe’s happening musical hotspots. It’s the city where Savage Garden, The Saints and Powderfinger made their mark before achieving national and international recognition. Small Mercies may well swell those ranks.
Small Mercies’ vocalist Steve Blaik, guitarist Danny Procopis and drummer Marty O’Brien all met at high school. Steve and Danny form the band’s song writing hub while Marty, along with bassist Jeff Reeves, complete the group and provide a rock solid rhythm section.

Small Mercies Lyrics

Too young, maybe I'm too damn proud to give in
You say
The things we do to those that we love
Hold me back cause I've had enough of living
This way
Hey
You hit me harder than the atom bomb
But I Know
I'll be strong
Come on, Come on
You pin me down and tell me that I'm wrong
But I know
I'll be strong
Someone's got me caught in a trance
Until now I thought we'd romance forever
But who knows
Things we do to those that we love
When your pushes turn into shoves won't let it
Control
No
Come on, Come on
You hit me harder than the atom bomb
But I Know
I'll be strong
Come on, Come on
You pin me down and tell me that I'm wrong
But I know
I'll be strong
I can't escape
Why can't I break the hold
I can't take it, it feels unexposed
With such a shame, but now we know
Come on, Come on
You hit me harder than the atom bomb
But I Know
I'll be strong
Come on, Come on
You pin me down and tell me that I'm wrong
But I know
I'll be strong
Come on, Come on
You hit me harder than the
Come on, Come on
You hit me harder than the
Come on, Come on
You hit me harder than the
Come on, Come on
Come on
The lyrics of Small Mercies's "Come On" talk about being controlled by someone else, but refusing to give in and break under their influence. The singer understands that the person they love is manipulating them, but they are too proud to admit that they are being affected. The chorus repeats the phrase "Come on" as if to demand the strength to resist that hold.
The verse "You say the things we do to those that we love" implies that the person they love is hurting them intentionally. The singer feels trapped and helpless, as though they are in a trance that they can't escape. However, they refuse to let their situation defeat them.
The chorus repeats multiple times, emphasizing the struggle to resist the hold someone has on them. The lyrics express the internal turmoil the singer faces, but also the resolve they have to overcome it.
Interestingly, Small Mercies's "Come On" was featured in the season one finale of the hit Netflix show "Outer Banks." The song was also included in the soundtrack of the popular video game "FIFA 21."

I loved this book! ❤
Jamie Suzanne
I'm reading the book now and it's truly riveting. You feel like you've known the various Irish-American characters from the 'Commonwealth' housing all of your life, or at least, some semblance of them. It's the realistic dialogue that really draws you into the story. Pure, classic Lehane. If you have been a fan of his books since the beginning, like myself, this one will not disappoint!
