Smalltown Poets achieved recognition with their eponymous first album, released on Ardent Records in 1997. This release earned the band the first of its two Grammy nominations (Best Gospel Rock Album) and numerous Dove Award nominations. Despite line-up changes, the band stayed active for more than ten years, releasing three albums on Ardent Records and one on BEC Recordings.
Smalltown Poets went on hiatus several months after their fourth studio album called It's Later Than It's Ever Been," but regrouped in the fall of 2010 to begin production on a Christmas album due out in 2011 (co-produced and mixed by former Smalltown Poets drummer Matt Goldman). In anticipation of that full-length release, the band released a Christmas single in December 2010 titled "In the Bleak Midwinter."
The full-length project, Smalltown Poets Christmas, was released on Nov. 1st, 2011, on the band's own Friendly City Records label and is available on iTunes, Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, and other online media outlets.
Quasar
Smalltown Poets Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I appear so small and barely make a sound
Still mysterious these frequencies they draw you out
Looking for some light, see what I'm all about
The rest of them are stars
The rest of them are stars
I'm a quasar
Passed constellations where so many wishes have been caught
There you can find me incubating thought
Did you get consolation from a diamond in the sky
Or did he let you down don't stop there tonight
The rest of them are stars, the rest of them are stars
Can they know for certain what I can become
I may let down a few or off and surprise some
And as the sun outshines it seems like I've disappeared
Yet there are these sounds anyone can hear
You'll find me, you'll find me moving fastly to illuminate
And brightly and brightly for the effort from so far away
From the rest of them, the rest of them
The rest of them are stars, the rest of them are stars
The rest of them are stars, the rest of them are stars
I'm a quasar, I'm a quasar
The lyrics to "Quasar" by Smalltown Poets are about feeling small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things but also realizing that there is something unique about oneself. The "I" in the song expresses a desire to be recognized and understood for who they are, despite feeling like they barely make a sound in the vastness of the universe. The repetition of "The rest of them are stars" emphasizes the singer's sense of being different or special, compared to others who might seem more average or ordinary.
There are references to astronomy and space, such as passing constellations and a diamond in the sky, which add to the feeling of looking up and trying to find one's place in the cosmos. The singer wonders if others can truly predict what they might accomplish or what their potential is, and they acknowledge that they might disappoint some people but also surprise others. The final lines suggest a determination to shine brightly, to illuminate and stand out in some way, even if it's not immediately obvious or visible to everyone.
Overall, the song seems to be about the tension between feeling small and wanting to be seen or recognized, as well as the idea that there might be something valuable or unique about every individual.
