Smalltown Poets achieved recognition with their eponymous first album, released on Ardent Records in 1997. This release earned the band the first of its two Grammy nominations (Best Gospel Rock Album) and numerous Dove Award nominations. Despite line-up changes, the band stayed active for more than ten years, releasing three albums on Ardent Records and one on BEC Recordings.
Smalltown Poets went on hiatus several months after their fourth studio album called It's Later Than It's Ever Been," but regrouped in the fall of 2010 to begin production on a Christmas album due out in 2011 (co-produced and mixed by former Smalltown Poets drummer Matt Goldman). In anticipation of that full-length release, the band released a Christmas single in December 2010 titled "In the Bleak Midwinter."
The full-length project, Smalltown Poets Christmas, was released on Nov. 1st, 2011, on the band's own Friendly City Records label and is available on iTunes, Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, and other online media outlets.
There's A Day
Smalltown Poets Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How quickly did my skin
Sense the chill upon the breeze
And I'm uneasy, the night surrounds me
As dusk ushers out the light of day
A symbol to be sure that my life can't forever stay
There's a day when there will be no night
Don't you know the lamb will be our light
Vassal, star and noble moon
(There's a day)
Your king comes riding soon
[Incomprehensible]
And as I mourn this loss of mine
I'll leave it up for you to shine
There's a day when there will be no night
There's a day when there will be no night
Don't you know the lamb will be our light
Darkness makes the baby cry
So the father sings a lullaby to drive the tears away
There's a day when there will be no night
There's a day when there will be no night
Don't you know the lamb will be our light
There's a day when there will be no night
(There's a day when there will be no night)
The lyrics to Smalltown Poets' "There's a Day" refer to the transition from day to night and the sense of unease and loss that can accompany this change. The first verse describes the sunset and the sudden chill that can come with it. The singer feels uneasy as the night surrounds them and the light of day fades away. This fading of light serves as a symbol for the impermanence of life.
The chorus speaks to a hope for a future day when there will be no night, when the "lamb" (a reference to Jesus) will be our light. This theme of hope is repeated in the last verse as the father sings a lullaby to his crying baby to drive away the tears. The implication is that, even in the face of loss and darkness, there is hope in the promise of a future day of light and comfort.
Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the transience of life and the hope that comes with faith in a higher power. It speaks to the universal human experience of loss and the comfort that can be found in the promise of something better to come.
