Smalltown Poets achieved recognition with their eponymous first album, released on Ardent Records in 1997. This release earned the band the first of its two Grammy nominations (Best Gospel Rock Album) and numerous Dove Award nominations. Despite line-up changes, the band stayed active for more than ten years, releasing three albums on Ardent Records and one on BEC Recordings.
Smalltown Poets went on hiatus several months after their fourth studio album called It's Later Than It's Ever Been," but regrouped in the fall of 2010 to begin production on a Christmas album due out in 2011 (co-produced and mixed by former Smalltown Poets drummer Matt Goldman). In anticipation of that full-length release, the band released a Christmas single in December 2010 titled "In the Bleak Midwinter."
The full-length project, Smalltown Poets Christmas, was released on Nov. 1st, 2011, on the band's own Friendly City Records label and is available on iTunes, Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, and other online media outlets.
Waterfall

You could say anything, I would play it back
If we took the beach side down to where the boardwalk ends
I would find a way to introduce you to my friends
Were you a pool there on the mountain, standing tall
I would be a waterfall
I would carry water down from depths that run untold
If you were the umbrella now and I the driving rain
I'd wish you were a bucket underneath the window pane
If I play the field a while, I might miss the catch
When I show my colors, I'll be in need of their match
Were you a pool there on the mountain, standing tall
I would be a waterfall
I would carry water down from depths that run untold
Living water, walls can't hold
If your words were water brimming over to be heard by all
I'd be the drop there on the edge, the drop that pulls the waterfall
Pulls the waterfall
I will be the piece of clay and you the hands that mold
You will be the purchase made of everything I've sold
Were you a pool there on the mountain, standing tall
I would be a waterfall
I would carry water down from depths that run untold
Living water, walls can't hold
Were you a pool there on the mountain, standing tall
I would be a waterfall
I would carry water down from depths that run untold
Living water, walls can't hold
The song "Waterfall" by Smalltown Poets tells the story of a person who wants to be a reliable and attentive partner to their loved one. In the first verse, the singer imagines being like a tape recorder, always ready to listen and understand anything their partner has to say. They also express a desire to introduce their partner to their friends. The second verse continues with more metaphors - this time imagining the singer as a waterfall and their partner as a pool on a mountain. The singer promises to be a source of "living water" that cannot be contained by any walls. The third verse brings out the theme of dependency and mutual support in a relationship. The singer knows they are not perfect and might make mistakes, but they hope their partner will be like an umbrella to protect them in tough times. They also imagine being like a piece of clay for their partner to mold, and giving up everything they've sold to be with them.
Overall, the song portrays a deep yearning for intimacy, vulnerability, and emotional connection. The imagery of water is used to symbolize the free-flowing nature of emotions and the need for constant nourishment in a relationship. The lyrics suggest that the singer is willing to give their all to their partner and hopes that they will reciprocate.
