Smalltown Poets achieved recognition with their eponymous first album, released on Ardent Records in 1997. This release earned the band the first of its two Grammy nominations (Best Gospel Rock Album) and numerous Dove Award nominations. Despite line-up changes, the band stayed active for more than ten years, releasing three albums on Ardent Records and one on BEC Recordings.
Smalltown Poets went on hiatus several months after their fourth studio album called It's Later Than It's Ever Been," but regrouped in the fall of 2010 to begin production on a Christmas album due out in 2011 (co-produced and mixed by former Smalltown Poets drummer Matt Goldman). In anticipation of that full-length release, the band released a Christmas single in December 2010 titled "In the Bleak Midwinter."
The full-length project, Smalltown Poets Christmas, was released on Nov. 1st, 2011, on the band's own Friendly City Records label and is available on iTunes, Amazon.com, CDBaby.com, and other online media outlets.
Who you are

On a shining star
Ready to give just a glimpse
A little bit of who You are
When the heavens wink
On a midnight clear
Takes me back thirty years
Glory, glory, angels sing
To the now and always King
Glory to the one who brings
A little bit of who You are
I lay my head in a pasture bed
To this very day
There are few of us left to the Master's work
Is it true, help us on the way?
And the faintest flickers above have gone
But a shepherd greets me with dawn
Saying, "I am the one"
Glory, glory, angels sing
To the now and always King
Glory to the one who brings
A little bit of who You are
Suddenly there's nothing left of Him
But a little light burning deep within me
Glory, glory, angels sing
To the now and always King
Glory to the one who brings
Peace and life and everything
Glory, glory, angels sing
To the now and always King
Glory to the one who brings
Peace and life and everything
Glory, glory, angels sing
To the now and always King
Glory to the one who brings
A little bit of who You are
The song "Who You Are" by Smalltown Poets is a beautiful tribute to God and His greatness. The lyrics speak of how God brought hope to the world through a shining star, and how He reveals a little bit of Himself to us through His actions. The song also speaks of the idea of shepherding, comparing God to a guide who leads us through life's struggles and gives us comfort even when everything else around us feels hopeless.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of longing for God's presence and guidance, as the singer references being led by a shepherd and seeking help on the way. However, despite the hardships and crises of faith that may come, the song ends with the triumphant realization that God's light burns within us, and that He brings peace and life to everything.
Overall, "Who You Are" is a powerful song of faith that encourages listeners to trust in God and seek his guidance, even when things seem bleak.

Just REALLY listened to this for first time this season. It's not really Christmas til I damn tear up as the shepherd says "I am the one.". This is the one song my son asks for every year, and I figured I should say thanks. Thanks.
