Satéllite
Smash Mouth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see you floating by me
I see a beautiful face
It's pointed straight up toward the smog
I know, I know you feel my beaming
Can you sense my burning x-ray vision as you roll on by now?

You must be gravitating
To the vibe I'm generating
Or maybe not yet

I have known you forever
You pushed the reset button on the counter of my heart
But you'll laugh at my advances
But still I've gotta chance it
As I watch your dust

You do it (you do it), you do it for me, yeah
You do it (you do it), you do it for me, yeah
You do it (do it)
That's how I know that you are mine
That's how I know that you are mine
That's how I know that you are mine
That's how I know that you are mine

I send out to you (woo-woo-woo-woo)
Frequencies exceeding the speeding laws of sound
I extend out to you (woo-woo-woo-woo)
The satellite that will orbit your mind 'til you're down

That's how I know, that's how I know
I'm the asteroid that will infiltrate your soul
That's how I know, that's how I know
Speeding towards you, burning out of control

Yeah, you do it (do it), you do it for me
Yeah, you do it (do it), you do it for me
Yeah, you do it (do it)
That's how I know that you are mine
That's how I know that you are mine

That's how I know that you are mine
That's how I know that you are mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Smash Mouth's song "Satellite" paint a picture of a person observing someone they are clearly enamored with. The first two lines set the scene of the observer seeing the person "floating by" them, noticing their "beautiful face." However, the person they are observing is "pointed straight up towards the smog," suggesting a sense of distance or detachment between the two.

Despite this, the observer believes the person can feel their presence, as they ask "Can you sense my burning x ray vision?" This line sets up the metaphor of the observer as a satellite, sending out frequencies and orbiting the person's mind. The observer sees the person rolling by and believes they are gravitating towards their "vibe," but acknowledges that maybe they are not yet.

The next verse speaks to the history between the two, as the observer claims to have known the person "forever." The person has had a significant impact on the observer, as they describe them as having "pushed the reset button on the counter of my heart." Despite this deep connection, the person still laughs at the observer's advances. The observer acknowledges this, but still believes they have to take a chance and continue to pursue the person.

Overall, the lyrics of "Satellite" convey the idea of someone observing and pursuing another person they deeply care about, despite the potential for rejection. The metaphor of the observer as a satellite further emphasizes the sense of distance between the two, but also the desire to make a connection.

@GetOffUrPhone

Came back to this album after learning of Steve's passing. Still a classic, rest easy Steve. Hope all the heavy drinkers out there find other ways to mend their troubles

@wet-read

Me too! And like Steve, I have a long history of alcohol abuse. But I stopped drinking and have been sober for a little over five months now. However... as a former consumer of fine liquor, I can give advice about what to look for and what stuff to buy to those who are able to drink responsibly 😀
