Earth
Smile Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I might be at a table
And suddenly I'll catch
A fleeting vision of her crystal seas
Or I might be standing in a crowded dockyard faraway
Beneath the sun I've never seen
'Cos I have seen many worlds
For what it's worth
But I'll never see again
The planet earth
My earth
I might be chasing waves of light
Out towards the grim
Where stars are sparse
And the cold of space seeps in
But I might be in a barroom
Drinking menthylated gin
And thinking of places I have been
Yes I have seen many worlds
For what it's worth
But I'll never see again the planet earth
My earth
Cast adrift amongst the stars
I float from sun to sun
Dreaming of the world that gave me birth

All the places I have been
Remind me there is none to match the green living hills of earth.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Smile’s song “Earth” touch upon the theme of nostalgia and longing for one’s home planet. The singer in the song reflects on the experiences they have had on other worlds, such as catching a vision of the crystal seas of another planet while sitting at a table, or chasing waves of light out towards the grim where stars are sparse. However, despite these otherworldly experiences, the singer cannot shake the feeling of homesickness for their own planet, Earth.

The singer reminisces about the green, living hills of Earth and how none of the other places they have been can compare. Even while “cast adrift amongst the stars,” the singer dreams of returning to the world that gave them birth. The mention of drinking menthylated gin in a barroom adds a sense of melancholy to the song, hinting at a sense of displacement or disconnection from others in this alien, intergalactic context. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of bittersweet longing and a reminder of the preciousness and uniqueness of our home planet.

It's amazing how even this early on, you could still hear whispers of Queen's distinctive style.

ISTUGH

What a shame this song is not on spotify

İbrahim Solmaz

Staffel (vocalist here) actually sung and played for band Morgan as well back in 70's and one of their song had a sequence like this with same lyrics. Try searching Morgan - Nova Solis it should start around 7 min mark you can listen to that instead.

@İbrahim Solmaz aight imma check it out ty!

John Pistilli

Why,it's here to enjoy for free!

Barry Mitchell

@İbrahim Solmaz Never knew that, thanks. Morgan Fisher played on it too, before joining Mott The Hoople. He played keyboards live for Queen in 1982, before being sacked by Freddie with good reason!!!

David Connelly

Just heard Brian May talking about this track on the Rick Beato channel. Turns out there's a key moment at 2:22 when the guitar has to suddenly disappear and make way for the vocals. Apparently they only had four tracks.

I came here for the same reason (even though I've had the Smile album on vinyl since 1985). They did indeed only have 4 tracks, and all but one of the songs on the LP are in mono, but what an album!!! It features the original version of Doing Alright, which is on Queen 1, and a proto version of the Brighton Rock guitar solo. A 'must hear' for any Queen fan.

@em diar Yes, great call. I was programming last night with 'polar bear' on loop. Even without Freddie, I think this is a band that I could have really gotten into.

Miracle Man

Hahah, the same man!
