Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Smith Curt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Welcome to your life
There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you

Acting on your best behavior
Turn your back on Mother Nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

It's my own design
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the most

Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I'll be right behind you

So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I can't stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world

Say that you'll never, never, never, never need it
One headline why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure

Nothing ever lasts for ever
Everybody wants to rule the world

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Smith Curt's song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" speak to the human desire for power and control. The song begins with the idea that life is irreversible, and there is no going back. Even in our sleep, we will be found and held accountable for our actions. The first verse goes on to talk about how everyone wants to be in charge, and this desire often leads people to turn their backs on Mother Nature while acting on their best behavior.

The chorus of the song has a repeated line that says, "Everybody wants to rule the world." This line captures the central message of the song - that everyone has a desire to control their life and their environment. The second verse talks about how the desire for control can be self-destructive, as people become trapped in their own designs and feel remorse for their actions. However, the desire for freedom and pleasure persists, and people continue to strive for control and power.

The last verse seems to take a more optimistic tone, talking about a room where the light won't find you and holding hands while the walls come down. It suggests that there can be moments of peace and connection in a world where everyone wants to rule. However, the chorus again reminds us that this desire for control is universal and unrelenting.

I agree. I didn't fully grasp it in 1985 at 16, but now? Wow

@ItsNotRealLife

I've rubbing down some doors ready for painting and I kept singing and thinking about that very line.
For years I've been saying to people who don't really do anything with their lives but sit around moaning that this is not a rehearsal this is it no second chances but "welcome to your life, there's no turning back" sums it up perfectly, better than I ever did

@45ETOMER

Yeah that line just kind of hit me like a ton of bricks one day
