The Tears Of A Clown
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Now if there's a smile on my face
It's only there trying to fool the public
But when it comes down to fooling you
Now honey that's quite a different subject
But don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
You're gone and I'm hurting so bad
Like a clown I appear to be glad (sad, sad, sad, sad)
Now, there's some sad things known to man
But ain't too much sadder than
The tears of a clown when there's no one around, mm
Oh, yeah, baby
Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
In order to shield my pride, I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness
But don't let my show convince you
That I've been happy since you
Decided to go (why did you go?)
Oh, I need you so (I need you so)
I'm hurt and I want you to know (want you to know)
But for others, I put on a show, ooh, oh (it's just a show)
There's some sad things known to man
But ain't too much sadder than
The tears of a clown, when there's no one around, oh, yeah
Just like Pagliacci did
I try to keep my surface hid
Smiling in the public, I
But in my lonely room, I cry
The tears of a clown
When there's no one around, oh, yeah, baby
Now if there's a smile on my face
Don't let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression
Don't let this smile I wear
Make you think that I don't care
When really, I'm sad
Hurtin' so bad
The song "The Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles is a classic soul song about hiding one's true emotions behind a happy exterior. The lyrics suggest that the singer is putting on a brave face in public, but inwardly he is devastated by a lost love. The phrase "tears of a clown" alludes to the sad reality that even the funniest people can be hiding great pain.
The first verse establishes that the singer is trying to deceive the public into thinking he is happy. He admits that he is sad and hurting because someone he loves has left him. Even though he appears to be "glad" like a clown, his true emotions are "sadder than sad." In the next verse, the singer expresses that his outward happiness is only a facade. He is covering up his sadness to keep up his pride, but in reality, he is still in love with the one who left him. He wants this person to know the truth and that this happy exterior is all for show.
The chorus brings the phrase "tears of a clown" into the lyrics. The singer asserts that there is nothing sadder than a clown crying alone without an audience to appreciate his humor. The final verse invokes the character of Pagliacci, an opera clown who tries to keep his personal problems hidden from the audience. The singer feels the same way, trying to keep his sadness hidden from the world. However, he is still crying in his lonely room where nobody can see him. In the end, the song is both heartbreaking and uplifting. It acknowledges the pain of lost love but also suggests that it's possible to put on a brave face and overcome adversity.

Loved this song since I first heard it in the 60’s as a little kid, but this is the first time I’ve heard this version! This is one of the reasons YouTube is so great.
@TheEggplantThatAteChicago
It's nice to see an original version that honestly is the original version. Thank you!
@udfan07
Never heard this version until 2 days ago. This versions shows why vinyl is so good.
@jerryhaas6039
Awesome, I never heard this alternate vocal track before! Thanks for posting!

Can you believe THREE different versions of this song was available to the public?
This one is the 1967 mono album version.
It's good to have.
That was the last year of mono options on LP pressings in the US. As a result those are some of the hardest albums to find.
I'm still looking for Gladys Knight & The Pips first album with Motown "Everybody Needs Love" in mono.

This song was actually recorded 3 different times this being their first recording of this song thanks to Stevie Wonder for it all.
@Rockstaralan
VERY neat! In addition to the more powerful alternate vocal, the WHOLE track just has an altogether different FEEL in mono than the better-known stereo version! Thanks for sharing!
@PhuckHue2
He wrote the lyrics from being on tour and missing his wife. He was really in love with Claudette. Being in love is wonderful
@dougsmith7083
I really like this alternate take. It is a lot more driving and tailored for the dancefloor in this arrangement...it seems to be a bit of a faster tempo too...and, the MONO mix is always gonna be good to the drums and horns...again, dancefloor fillers!!
Smokey's vocal is a lot less his signature silky smooth soulful vocal and, a lot more raw and, matter-of-fact
@clovis57
Thank you so much. I am blown away by the alternate vocals! Incredible. Is the stereo mix from 1967 with this same alternate vocals?
