People going on about which is better MJ or Smokey's. That's not how it works. These are two creative artists interpreting a song in two very different ways. Smokey seems broken and resigned emotionally in his rendition while MJ puts more fight into it like he feels and believes that if he cries hard enough he can get her back. That's the way I hear it anyway. And I think the version that works for you is the one that tallies with your emotion being.

I agree with you it is a difficult song to sing vocally. Smokey Robinson puts a lot of emotion into it and he wrote it. Michael Jackson was so young when he sang it yet he has the emotional debth of an adult. When Michael Jackson was a child he didn't sing like a child but like an adult who had been singing all their life and gone through much heartbreak and tough times. Michael Jackson had a great vocal range and rhythm when he sang the fast songs. I like both versions. Some of Etta James' songs are also hard to sing.

I love Smokey Robinson. His singing and song writing skills were undeniable but Michael was special. He, at only 11, jacked a song from The one and only, Smokey Robinson and made it his own. I've never seen a young child sing and perform so effortlessly before or after Micheal. Frankie Lymon had great stage presence as a kid but nothing like Micheal's. MJ did one of the best of not THE BEST rendition of this song and put his own spin on it as a child. The Jackson 5 would not be as big as they were without Smokey Robinson or Motown. Smokey had the talent to write and sing way before anyone was signed, and it was he who wrote the hit songs for other artists bringing Motown its notoriety and fame. Motown artists worked together to help each other succeed, not to compete. It's safe to assume that Smokey saw this as a fitting song for the young Michael Jackson's voice and let him use it to get on the charts. This was in no way competition for who could do it better, both versions are great.

Yep, it was like he lived two lives first as the Jackson 5 to the Jackson's, then on to M.J., did I say two, I meant 3, sooooooo much pressure, but he loved to perform, I think it took place of the lost child hood that was omitted from his young life, he was like Hercules holding the family on his little "shoulders"
