While touring in Ireland, the discovered the audience would cheer back "Who the Fuck is Alice?". As it turns out , this was a ritual at a Café in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) called "Gompie". The group decided to "cover" this version with comedian Roy Chubby Brown having the honor of yelling "Alice, Who the Fuck is Alice?" during the chorus. Thus, Smokie holds the record as the first group to have a top ten song with the word "fuck" in it.

Baby It's You
Smokie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It seemed so long
I really needed a friend
Why should I pretend?
I couldn't think I had to see
That Southern Comfort comforts me
I could be free
Then you came along
And you sang your song
And you made my day
In your special way
Then I knew
That baby it's you
Baby it's you
You know that it's you I'm thinking of
Baby it's you
Try my best to get along
Make some friends, but something always went wrong
I come on too strong
Things were really getting rough
Getting tired of acting like I was tough
I just had enough
Then you came along
And you sang your song
And you made my day
In your special way
Then I knew
That baby it's you
Baby it's you
You know that it's you I'm thinking of
Baby it's you
(Chorus x 2)
In "Baby It's You," the singer is feeling lost and alone, in need of a friend. He reaches for Southern Comfort, an alcoholic beverage, as a means of escape. He realizes that he has been suppressing his emotions and unable to express himself genuinely. His personal relationships have grown strained, and he is at the end of his rope. However, the chorus introduces a ray of hope: a person that comes to him, expressing themselves and making the singer's day in their own unique way. The persona has finally found a companion that can understand his trials, and it had been a baby all along.
The song's chorus follows the traditional structure of a love song, proclaiming love and one's connection with their object of affection. But when compared to other lyrics in the composition, the intimacy between the two figures begins to look more platonic. Perhaps the singer is describing his journey of self-discovery and how the unnamed person in the song helped him to achieve a positive outcome.
The song's real beauty is in its relatability – almost everyone has felt lost, alone, and in need of a guiding presence to bring them through challenging times. Smokie realized this when writing the song and crafted its lyrics from such a quality, making it timeless.
