While touring in Ireland, the discovered the audience would cheer back "Who the Fuck is Alice?". As it turns out , this was a ritual at a Café in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) called "Gompie". The group decided to "cover" this version with comedian Roy Chubby Brown having the honor of yelling "Alice, Who the Fuck is Alice?" during the chorus. Thus, Smokie holds the record as the first group to have a top ten song with the word "fuck" in it.

Have You Ever Seen The Rain
Smokie Lyrics

There's a calm before the storm
I know, It's been coming for some time
When it's over so they sy
It'll rain a sunny day
I know shining down like water
I want to know
I want to know
Have you ever seen the rain
Comin' down on a sunny day
Yesterday and days before
Sund is cold and rain is hard
I know, been that way for all my time
'Till forever on it goes
Through the circle fast and slow
I know, and it can't stop I wonder
I want to know
Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm
I know, it's been coming for some time
When it's over so they say
It'll rain a sunny day
I know, shining down like water
I want to know
I want to know
This song is steeped in metaphorical language, exploring the idea of experiencing both sunshine and rain simultaneously. The lyrics “Someone told me long ago, there's a calm before the storm” suggest that the singer is aware of the upcoming rough patch but thinks it's necessary because “when it's over so they say, it'll rain a sunny day". The lyrics also encapsulate human feelings of being stuck in a vicious cycle, with the line “Through the circle fast and slow” indicating the feeling of being in a never-ending cycle of pleasure and pain. The lyrics “I know, and it can’t stop, I wonder” seem to suggest a feeling of helplessness in the face of this cycle.
The chorus, “I want to know/Have you ever seen the rain/Comin’ down on a sunny day” continues the metaphorical theme of sunshine and rain. The singer is asking if anyone has experienced the rare and perplexing phenomenon of rain on a day when it's sunny outside. This seems to suggest that the idea of existence being a mix of happiness and sadness is not something that everyone has experienced. Overall, the song seems to suggest the complexity and bittersweetness of being alive.

This is a brilliant version of the CCR hit. I've never seen Smokie live, but I now realise I need to put that to rights. Well done lads, great version.
