Oh Well Oh Well
Smokie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh well, oh well
You're on your own again, yes
And who can tell
Maybe this time, that's how you'll stay

Too bad, too bad
He's gone and left you
But it's so sad, so sad
I warned you about the things you say

You wonder why you lose every guy
You don't even try, it's just the things you say

Hello, hello
Who's this you're talking to now?
And so, and so
Looks like you've found another day

You wonder why you lose every guy
You don't even try, it's just the things you say

Now you've gone and brought him down
And he says he ain't hangin' around
You have told him that he's no good
He doesn't do the things he should

No wonder he has gone away
All that's left for me to say is

Oh well, oh well
You're on your own again, yes
And who can tell
Maybe this time, that's how you'll stay

Too bad, too bad
(Oh, it's too bad)
He's gone and left you
And it's so sad, so sad
(Yes, it's so sad)
I warned you about the things you say

You wonder why you lose every guy
You don't even try, it's just the things you say

Oh well, oh well
(Oh well, oh well)
Maybe this time, that's how you'll stay

Oh well, oh well
(Oh well, oh well)
[Incomprehensible] you've found another day

Oh well, oh well
(Oh well, oh well)
You know it's just the things you say

Oh well, oh well
(Oh well, oh well)
I warned you about the things you say

Oh well, oh well

(Oh well, oh well)
[Incomprehensible]

Overall Meaning

The song Oh Well Oh Well by Smokie is a cautionary tale about a woman who has lost yet another man because of her sharp tongue. The song leads with the woman being left by her partner and the warning that maybe she'll be alone for good this time. The songwriter then recounts how he tried to warn her about the things she says to men, but she doesn't listen. The woman in the song is portrayed as wondering why she always loses men but never tries to change her ways.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the warnings and advice that the songwriter provides to the woman, who still does not take heed. Towards the end of the song, it becomes clear that the woman has driven away yet another man by criticizing him and not appreciating him. The song ends with the singer echoing the opening lament that the woman is now alone again and perhaps this time for good.
