The band were founded at the University of Dundee in 1994 by Lightbody, Mark McClelland, and Michael Morrison of Shrug. After briefly using the name Polarbear, releasing the EP Starfighter Pilot (1997) and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in 1997 and added Quinn to its lineup. Their first two studio albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), released by the independent record label Jeepster Records, were commercially unsuccessful. The band then signed to the major record label Polydor Records in 2002.
Connolly joined Snow Patrol in 2002, and after their major-label debut album, Final Straw, the following year, with "Run", the album's biggest hit, the band rose to national fame. The album was certified 5x platinum in the UK. Their next studio album, Eyes Open (2006), and its hit single, "Chasing Cars"—reported in 2019 to be the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio—propelled the band to greater international fame. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and was the best-selling British album of the year. In 2008, Snow Patrol released their fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns; then, in 2009, they released their first compilation album, Up to Now; and, in 2011, their sixth studio album, Fallen Empires, was published. The band released their seventh album, Wildness, on 25 May 2018.
During the course of their career, Snow Patrol have won seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and been nominated for six Brit Awards and one Grammy. Final Straw, Eyes Open, and A Hundred Million Suns have sold ten million copies worldwide, combined.

And left a note at your bedside
I'm far too shy to speak to you at school
You leave me numb and I'm not sure why
I find it easier to sit and stare
Than push my lens up towards you right there
My heart is bursting in your perfect eyes
I struggle for the words and then give up
My head's up with the birds and the seagulls
A little piece of mind that I know better
Than the plain disgrace of all my letters
But after that the floodgates opened up
And I fell in love with everyone I saw
Please take your time I'm not in any rush
And it's in everything I ever write
It's not as if I need the extra weight
Confused enough by life so thanks a lot
Only written words for company
Just raise the roof this once and follow me
I struggle for the words and then give up
My head's up with the birds and the seagulls
A little piece of mind that I know better
Than the plain disgrace of all my letters
In Snow Patrol's song "Spitting Games", the singer is a shy individual who has left a note at their crush's bedside after breaking into their house. The singer cannot bring themselves to speak to their crush at school, and instead finds it easier to simply stare at them from afar. The singer is enamored with their crush's perfect blue eyes and struggles to express their feelings through words. The singer acknowledges their inadequacy with words, claiming that their letters are a plain disgrace. However, they also claim to have fallen in love with everyone they see, and implore their crush to take their time with them.
The song captures the feeling of being in love but not knowing how to express it, and feeling like everything you do or say falls short of capturing the depth of your emotions. It is a relatable feeling for many, especially those who have experienced unrequited love or shyness in romantic situations. The singer's vulnerability and honesty in their lyrics make the listener feel as though they are right there with them, experiencing the same tumultuous emotions. The imagery used in describing the crush's eyes as "as blue as oceans and as pure as skies" adds to the intense romanticism of the lyrics.
