The band were founded at the University of Dundee in 1994 by Lightbody, Mark McClelland, and Michael Morrison of Shrug. After briefly using the name Polarbear, releasing the EP Starfighter Pilot (1997) and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in 1997 and added Quinn to its lineup. Their first two studio albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), released by the independent record label Jeepster Records, were commercially unsuccessful. The band then signed to the major record label Polydor Records in 2002.
Connolly joined Snow Patrol in 2002, and after their major-label debut album, Final Straw, the following year, with "Run", the album's biggest hit, the band rose to national fame. The album was certified 5x platinum in the UK. Their next studio album, Eyes Open (2006), and its hit single, "Chasing Cars"—reported in 2019 to be the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio—propelled the band to greater international fame. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and was the best-selling British album of the year. In 2008, Snow Patrol released their fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns; then, in 2009, they released their first compilation album, Up to Now; and, in 2011, their sixth studio album, Fallen Empires, was published. The band released their seventh album, Wildness, on 25 May 2018.
During the course of their career, Snow Patrol have won seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and been nominated for six Brit Awards and one Grammy. Final Straw, Eyes Open, and A Hundred Million Suns have sold ten million copies worldwide, combined.

I can't hold the fort, saying give me more.
I struggle and sweat,
Now I'm wide awake.
With mind all I'm fine, with my ears to find.
It's the same thing again,
But it could become a problem if
We don't deal with it now,
I've not opened my mouth,
Can you read my mind so easily?
As the madness sets in
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
A sudden movement and a broken limb,
The patches are there to show where I'm heading.
My fault is it now? Well its news to me.
Cause each of us, we try once again.
It's the same thing again,
But it could become a problem if
We don't deal with it now,
And you blast off in another end.
I've not opened my mouth,
Can you read my mind so easily?
As the madness sets in,
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you
You must know that I'll follow you.
The lyrics in Snow Patrol's song "Whatever's Left" express the feelings of someone who has been through a series of similar situations before and struggling to find a new approach to handle the same issues. The singer confesses to not being able to hold their ground and needing more from their situation. The lines, "I struggle and sweat, Now I'm wide awake, With mind all I'm fine, with my ears to find," show the singer's physical and emotional exhaustion.
The singer is aware that the same problems could escalate and become a bigger issue if not addressed immediately. They question whether their thoughts and emotions are being read so easily, and in turn, they never vocalize their thoughts. The lines, "It's the same thing again, But it could become a problem if We don't deal with it now, And we blast off in another end," express this fear of not being able to move past their current situation.
The chorus, "As the madness sets in, You must know that I'll follow you," echoes the feelings of hopelessness, desperation, and the need for someone to take charge and lead them out of their current state of mind. The singer is willing to follow whoever can take them out of their overwhelming and confusing state. The verse, "A sudden movement and a broken limb, The patches are there to show where I'm heading, My fault is it now? Well, it's news to me," throws light on the singer's confusion and feelings of guilt for the situation they find themselves in.
Overall the lyrics speak to the universal human condition of feeling trapped in a cycle of similar negative emotions and struggling to find a way out. The singer is grappling with the same problems but yearns for a solution.
