Punchline
Snuff Lyrics

That weren't what wife was after
Pushed the joke too far
Into the here and after
I know you can hear
That's no sense of humour
Twenty nine
It through to the last laugh
Thirty three found dead in a car
Went out and bought the car
Pushed the joke too far
Into the here and after
I know you can hear
That's no sense of humour
Was it really the only way to see
It through to the last laugh
You pushed too hard, you pushed too far
The punchline was lost on you
No need to wait
No need to try to even see it through
Twenty nine found dead in the bath (what's the punchline?)
Thirty three found dead in a car (what's the punchline?)
Was it really the only way to see
It through to the last laugh
The song Punchline by Snuff is a dark and haunting commentary on the consequences of taking a joke too far. The lyrics depict two scenarios in which individuals have pushed a joke so far that it results in mass fatalities. The first one being 29 people found dead in a bath, which was not what the wife had in mind; the second being 33 found dead in a car, which the joker went out and bought.
The lyrics suggest that the joker did not understand the gravity of their actions and were blinded by their sense of humor. The repetition of the line "Was it really the only way to see it through to the last laugh?" emphasizes the idea that the joke, no matter how funny it may have seemed to the joker, was not worth the devastating consequences that followed.
The chorus "You pushed too hard, you pushed too far, the punchline was lost on you, no need to wait, no need to try to even see it through" offers a warning to those who may be inclined to take a joke too far. It tells them to reconsider their actions and not to prioritize the punchline over the safety and well-being of others.
