Exile
Society Burning Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been on the outside for so long,
It almost feels more like home than belonging.
I've gone so for long on so little,
I've almost gotten used to the wanting.

Forgive me if I laugh a little too loud,
I just happened to find myself alive.
Forgive me if I bleed when I get hurt,
I just happened to find myself alive.

If no one will fix me,
I must not be broken,
All the other things,
Are better left unspoken.
If no one will fix me,
I must not be broken,

I’m not broken.

I've been called a freak for so long,
It's a badge of honor when it comes from you.
Such a function of the system's program,
There's really nothing much more you can do.

Forgive me if I speak out of turn,
I just happened to find myself alive.
Forgive me if I say shit no one wants to hear,
I just happened to find myself still alive.

If no one will fix me,
I must not be broken,
If no one will save me,
Are better left unspoken.
If no one will fix me,
I must not be broken,

I’m not broken.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Society Burning's song Exile are an anthem for those who have been exiled from society and find themselves as outcasts. The first stanza draws a stark contrast between the singer's sense of belonging and the loneliness they feel on the outside. They have become accustomed to longing for something more and have accepted their disconnected state as the norm. However, in the second stanza, there is a sense of defiance that emerges. Instead of hiding in shame, the singer is unapologetic about their existence and their right to be alive, even if it means they bleed a little when they get hurt. The chorus reinforces this stance - if there's no one to fix them, then maybe they're not broken after all.

The third stanza speaks to the ridicule and rejection that the singer has faced, being called a freak and wearing this label as a badge of honor. The system of society has created a norm that excludes those who don't fit in, and the singer refuses to conform to this narrow definition of acceptability. The fourth stanza continues this theme, with the singer not caring if what they say is unpopular, as their right to exist is paramount. The chorus strikes again, reiterating that if no one will fix them, they must not be broken.
