Less Than Zero
Society Burning Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My gift to you is...
My gift to you is...

There are people running around
Trying to be used
Trying to find love
The way Hitler loved the Jews
There's a nasty world outside
And it's got us on our knees
There's people in the forest
Making love to the trees

Less than zero
We're painting flags on our faces
Less than zero
Fill in the empty spaces

We're living in a jungle
With monkeys on our backs
There's people in South Africa
Trying to love the blacks

I'm just another Icarus
Screaming as I fall
Back to the arms of mother Earth
Another blind animal

My gift to you is...

Overall Meaning

The opening line "My gift to you is..." sets the tone for Society Burning's song Less Than Zero. The gift being offered is ambiguous, as the lyrics that follow describe a world that is ugly, violent, and depraved. The first and second stanzas paint a picture of people running aimlessly, searching for a sense of purpose or love. However, the metaphor of "the way Hitler loved the Jews" subverts any hint of optimism or positivity within the lyrics. The listener is then given a glimpse into a world that is "nasty" and has everyone "on their knees." The sexual imagery of "people in the forest making love to the trees" is an unsettling image that could be interpreted as mankind's destructive nature towards the environment. The chorus, "Less than zero, we're painting flags on our faces, fill in the empty spaces" emphasizes a sense of emptiness and desperation within the individuals and society as a whole. The last verse reveals the singer's personal struggles, comparing himself to Icarus, a mythological figure who flew too close to the sun and fell to his death.

How Green Is My Toupee

Sorry about that! I still haven't finished anything. I've been playing with the midi file you sent me last year but the thing is I just wasn't happy with the end result. I'll give it another shot one of these days.
