I remember as a little girl maybe 4 or 5 and I was visiting my grandparents in Canada. I slept with my grandma that night and accidentally wet the bed. My grandma was so understanding. She cleaned me up, washed the sheets and said this will be our little secret(not that my parents would have been angry but to keep it between us no one needs to know). That's what good parenting is not humiliation.

This woman touched my heart. I was too after a beating either be stripped naked or however I was locked out of my house so cars can mock me. I would pee myself out of fright. It was horrible. I’m happy she told the story, but also brought back a shameful memory that I stored away for many years. Thank you to this woman for sharing these stories. At some point, one of us need to be heard.

I am the fourth child of iris and I learned a lot of this information today, and it taught me so much about myself that I didn’t know. This isn’t about me though this woman did absolutely everything take make the best raising two of the worst behaved boys as a single mother with and habitual incarcerated father my mother will not see you in 20 years and just pick up like it never stopped all of the motherless girls and girls in bad home life’s adored my mom they slept at my apt more than my male friends to have shelter from problems at their home I’m so proud that this tough warrior survivor woman taught me how to be human I cried tears of pain today but your comments gave me tears of joy I love you momma and yearn for a time you scratch my head till I fall asleep 🖤

What is so disturbing besides the abuse of children is the fact that everyone seems to know that this exists, and it is still happening to kids right now as I am writing this comment. I remember as a child, over hearing adults saying what horrible things that happen to children who are put into the child welfare system. It seemed to be well known then, it seems to be well known now and still as I am in my mid 40's, it is well known now. That is at least 4 decades that if this topic is spoken of, very few seem shocked by it and yet nothing is done to stop it. Laura Silsby was caught trafficking 33 undocumented children but that wasn't that long ago. Look into who just bought MJ neverland ranch. See what the article says the buyer wants to do with it. WTF is this even an option? Why is it that almost every drug addict homeless person has the same story as children? Decade after decade after decade the world knows this is going on and yet it still goes on. What does that say about humanity? What does it say when a person who abuses an animal gets punished more harshly than a person who abuses a child? These children, regardless of their cultural background are children, they are helpless, they cannot defend themselves, the time to help is when they are children, not when they are drug addicted young adults. The damage that is done ruins them not only mentally but physically.

Yes it is the most undiscussed topic out there. Foster children are all traumatized and then they are pathologized, and most often drugged (big pharma loves foster kids -- no one to advocate for their best interests), while in the system too.

Their normal reactions to abnormal events are used as evidence that they are 'bad seeds' and this becomes internalized. They often don't even have a birth certificate or the right documentation (as Iris mentioned at one point) to even get properly established as young adults, no one to co-sign their leases or loans.

Not surprising 79% of U.S. prisoners are former CPS kids.

They want to throw the book at those who get in trouble as adults, but didn't care about them when they were abused kids.

The culture shock for Cuban immigrants is tremendous. I spent many years in south Florida. Iris experienced so much trauma in addition to cultural differences. This is worse than my own traumas. I cannot even fathom how she survived without intense therapy. I am so happy that you interviewed Iris. She has so much to share. Iris, you are an amazing woman. MY parents are cuban immigrants from miami and I happen to know many. They tend to kick the ladder down once they are in and are just as cruel if not more to anyone else seeking refuge in America (except other cubans). In miami its an "I got mine" screw everyone else attitude. Most cubans in miami are ultra anti-immigration and ultra conservative.

I can so relate to her being a child refugee in the early 90s fleeing a war torn country. From the pee-pee problem due to nerves to feeling lost in this new world. Thank goodness I had my family with me but they were traumatised from the war. I had to grow up quickly and at 7 I started taking care of my mother who had PTSD and later developed schizophrenia and my disabled older brother. Sending you love and warm hugs dear Iris!

I so enjoyed hearing Iris. I had the privilege of rooming with her over Christmas at the walter Hoving home in Pasadena, CA. She has been doing so well and what a joy and pleasure she is. To get to know her was like having a grandmother who dearly loves and cares. I wish you all the best , Iris ! Iris, I hope you know that warning others that your brother wasn't well and to not leave their children unattended with him, was never insulting your family and I'm sorry your mom couldn't understand.
