Last Chance
Soft Cell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a city lost in time
Somewhere sordid and sublime
We met over a gin and lime
One rainy evening
Survivors clinging to the mast
Trying to make the moment last just
Two people way past their prime
And how it shows

So come over here
For some romance
And dance with me
Like it's the last dance
And come home with me
Won't you come home with me
This is our last chance for love

You thought you looked like Carol White
Bleached hair piled upon your head but
You looked more like a lady of the night
Instead
In your see-through plastic mac
Homage to cheap sixties tack you're
So far out You're on your way back in
Again

I've wasted too many chances
On small ads and Internet romances
So come home with me
Won't you come home with me
This is our last chance for love

I toyed with a cigarette
Trying to look aloof and sexy
But I couldn't see for the smoke
In my eyes
OK, I have a shaky limp and
Dress a little like a pimp but
After your drink I'll still look OK
In a good light

I had some dreams where did they all go
Gone with my years
Nothing left to show
So come home with me
Won't you come home with me
This is our last chance for love
Come home with me
Won't you come home with me
This is our last chance
For romance
Our last chance

Come home with me
Won't you come home with me
This is our last chance for love

This is our last chance
This is our last chance for love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Soft Cell's song "Last Chance" describe two people who have met in a "city lost in time" and are now clinging to each other for a last chance at love. The somber mood of the song is set by the description of the city as "sordid and sublime," and the opening phrase "survivors clinging to the mast," implying that the two main characters are the remaining survivors of a shipwreck. The later imagery of the two characters as "people way past their prime" emphasizes the theme of the fleeting nature of love.

The chorus emphasizes the urgency and desperation of the characters' situation, with the repetition of the phrase "This is our last chance for love" and the plea for the other person to come home with them. The two characters are depicted as mismatched, with the singer describing their own physical shortcomings and the other character's resemblance to a prostitute. However, the desperation for connection overpowers any reservations they may have and they cling to each other "like it's the last dance."

The overall mood of the song is one of sadness, regret, and a yearning for human connection. The lyrics describe the desperation of two people who have perhaps been alone for too long and are clinging to each other as their last hope for love.

A beautiful & timely addition to the Soft Cell music capsule. It's great to have a Soft Cell Christmas song to play when you're opening your presents on Christmas morning. I've certainly had enough of Mariah b*****y Carey that's for sure! Is there any chance Radio 2 might pick it up, otherwise where will it get any exposure? I think Marc should put his favourite Snowman suit on & then go walking in the air over London singing this top tune very loudly while sprinkling glitter all over the city. That would get it noticed...lol...

Steven

tru dat
