Both Marc Almond and Dave Ball grew up in seaside towns (the former, Southport, and the latter, Blackpool), and later met while students at the Leeds Polytechnic Fine Arts University (now Leeds Metropolitan University). Almond, a performance artist, collaborated with Ball on a few avant-garde multi-media performances at the university. Although Ball's musical background consisted of guitar, he had access to the university studio and was experimenting with the nascent synthesizer technology at the time. The two students became the prototypical synth duo and were initially associated with other New Wave scenesters dubbed "New Romantics" by the British Press. Other bands associated with this scene included Visage, Duran Duran, and Spandau Ballet.
Marc Almond had a productive career as a solo artist later in the 80s and 90s and with Marc & the Mambas and other collaborations. Dave Ball has done a few solo productions with other British new wave acts in the early 80s. He also later was involved in the electronic dance act The Grid with Richard Norris.
Almond and Ball's reunion as Soft Cell became official with well-received initial concerts - they performed at the opening of the Ocean nightclub in London in March 2001 to strong reviews, and a mini tour followed later in the year. The track "God Shaped Hole" featured on the Some Bizzare compilation titled "I'd Rather Shout at a Returning Echo than Kid Someone's Listening", released in 2001. The album Cruelty Without Beauty was released in late 2002, followed by a European tour and a partial US tour in early 2003. The new album featured their first new songs together in almost twenty years. One of those songs was their 2003 single "The Night" (UK #39). Interestingly, Soft Cell had considered recording "The Night" in place of "Tainted Love" back in 1981 as their last-ditch attempt to score a chart hit. In a 2003 interview with BBC's Top of the Pops, keyboardist David Ball asserted, "I think history has kind of shown that we did make the right choice [in 1981]."
In August 2007, the band announced they were working on a remix album, "Heat - The Remixes". The remix album is expected to be released in May 2008 and will include classic Soft Cell tracks remixed by such acts as Manhattan Clique, Cicada, Richard X, Ladytron, MHC, Mark Moore, Kinky Roland, Spektrum, George Demure, Yer Man and many more.
Where Was Your Heart

Biting your nails like you were sixteen
Putting up your little walls
When emotion's around
Leave your little heart
In the lost and found
Your friends would die laughing
If they saw you this way
Where was your heart
When you needed it most?
Hand in hand with your innocence
Gave up the ghost
But it doesn't do to tell
You're at your best
When you're living hell
Just put on your hard face
You know you do that so well
Thank god you wore
Your waterproof make-up today
And who gives a damn about him anyway?
To him you're a body
And to hell with the mind
But you get the same stick from his type all the time
Just a couple of drinks
And they've got you tonight
And you know the sad thing
Is that they're often right
Where was your heart
When you needed it most?
Hand in hand with your innocence
Gave up the ghost
They take hold of your heart
And they spit it right out
Make a show of their conquest
When their friends are about
Your ego deflated
You gave up the fight
And became the good-time-had-by-all-every-night
And where was your heart
When you needed it most?
Hand in hand with your innocence
Gave up the ghost
No comfort of beds
Or the softness of sheets
Just the back of a car
Sprawled across the back seats
And he'll just not give up
And he's messed up your head
A dish in the disco
But a pig in the bed
So you build up a false love affair anyway
Photocopy soap opera stories all day
Where it all ends up fine
And it all ends in church
And the girl looks like you
And she never really gets hurt
And where was your heart
When you needed it most?
Hand in hand with your innocence
Gave up the ghost
"Where Was Your Heart" by Soft Cell is a powerful reflection on the emotional pain and heartbreak of being in a toxic, abusive relationship. The lyrics describe a person who has lost touch with their own feelings and emotions, building up walls and putting on a hard face to protect themselves from the pain of love. The chorus poses the central question of the song: "Where was your heart when you needed it most?" The singer is asking why they allowed themselves to be hurt and abused, and why they didn't remain true to their own emotions and feelings.
The song is filled with vivid imagery and emotional language, painting a picture of the desperation and isolation of the singer's situation. They describe being alone and lost, abandoned by their own heart and left to wander in a world of pain and betrayal. The lyrics are also unflinching in their portrayal of the emotional and physical abuse that the singer has experienced, and the way that this has warped their sense of self and their ability to love and trust others.
Overall, "Where Was Your Heart" is a challenging and provocative song that asks deep questions about the nature of love, betrayal, and self-determination. Soft Cell's powerful lyrics and haunting melody make this song a classic of the synthpop genre, and a deeply affecting commentary on the human condition.
Line by Line Meaning
You're time-wasting again
You're just aimlessly killing time
Biting your nails like you were sixteen
You're anxious and nervous, like a teenager
Putting up your little walls
You're shutting yourself off emotionally
When emotion's around
When feelings are involved
Leave your little heart
You've lost your sense of love and vulnerability
In the lost and found
It's nowhere to be found
Your friends would die laughing
Your friends would find it hilarious
If they saw you this way
If they saw how you're acting
Even though they cry the same tears every day
They're in the same emotional state
Where was your heart
Where were your feelings
When you needed it most?
When you were most vulnerable and needed emotional support?
Hand in hand with your innocence
Your innocence and purity went hand-in-hand with your feelings
Gave up the ghost
It's gone now and can't be found
But it doesn't do to tell
It's not helpful to say anything
You're at your best
You function optimally
When you're living hell
When you're in a bad place
Just put on your hard face
Just pretend to be tough
You know you do that so well
You're really good at hiding your emotions
Thank god you wore
Thankfully, you wore
Your waterproof make-up today
Your makeup won't smudge if you cry
And who gives a damn about him anyway?
Who cares about him at all?
To him you're a body
To him, you're just a physical object
And to hell with the mind
He doesn't care about your thoughts or feelings
But you get the same stick from his type all the time
But men like him treat you the same way
Just a couple of drinks
Just a few drinks
And they've got you tonight
And they'll take advantage of you tonight
And you know the sad thing
And the unfortunate thing is
Is that they're often right
Is that they're often correct in their assumptions
They take hold of your heart
They deceive you emotionally
And they spit it right out
And they discard your emotions without care
Make a show of their conquest
They brag about their sexual conquests
When their friends are about
When they're around their friends
Your ego deflated
Your pride and self-esteem are diminished
You gave up the fight
You stopped resisting their advances
And became the good-time-had-by-all-every-night
You became someone they used for a good time
No comfort of beds
No comfort of a bed
Or the softness of sheets
Or the soft linen of a bed
Just the back of a car
Just the back seat of a car
Sprawled across the back seats
Laying across the back seat
And he'll just not give up
And he will not stop pursuing you
And he's messed up your head
And he's harmed you emotionally
A dish in the disco
A desirable person in a club
But a pig in the bed
But someone who treats you poorly in private
So you build up a false love affair anyway
So you create an imaginary love story
Photocopy soap opera stories all day
You spend all day copying love stories from soap operas
Where it all ends up fine
Where everything works out in the end
And it all ends in church
And their love story ends in a wedding
And the girl looks like you
And the girl in the story resembles you
And she never really gets hurt
And she never experiences emotional pain
Where was your heart
Where were your feelings
When you needed it most?
When you were most vulnerable and needed emotional support?
Hand in hand with your innocence
Your innocence and purity went hand-in-hand with your feelings
Gave up the ghost
It's gone now and can't be found

After 37 years, still one of my most played albums. Soft Cell were probably the most important band throughout my teenage years. My love for them burns bright as ever.

2:13 That piano really reminds me of the piano used in the Silent Hill 3 OST, especially the piano at the end of "Innocent Moon (Other Take)".
