My younger brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. I love you Darius, I'll miss you everyday for the rest of my life

I've read many books on Joy Division and you're right there really is a darkness too his life. I think the man was a genius. The film "Control" in my opinion was really well done. It was a sad loss when he passed away and although New Order are a great band I often wonder what other great songs Ian Curtis could have given us. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" in my opinion has to be one of the greatest songs of all time. No matter how many times I've heard it it still sounds good every time and to be honest I rarely only listen to it once at a time I have to press repeat a few times, which is the sign of a good song.

Before the visual impact of video, radio was the medium we listened to and for me and many others in the UK, the person we listened to was the legendary John Peel. Every year around Christmas listeners would vote for their favourite songs (punk, new wave and anything earlier that had an 'edge' to it) And people voted in their thousands, all hand written letters from the 'youf' of the day.
And so when John Peels 'Festive 100' was voted for on the year of Ians' passing, we listened every night over a few days to hear the results and as we got to the top 10, it emerged that their impact was stunning:

Now 40 years since their last concert, Ian's suicide and the band's subsequent breakup.

Even the fact they were only around for 3 years doesn't diminish the legacy or influence they continue to have.

However mental health still remains a stigma 40 years later. It's ok not to be ok, don't be afraid of speaking to your family or mates.

Love Will Tear Us Apart at some point in our lives, but it will also bring us closer together.

he had a wife and young baby that he left at home whilst he travelled, during his travels he cheated on his wife with a French lady, he couldn't choose between the two this lead to depression. Plus he suffered from epilepsy (which the people around him didn't understand, they just though he was stupid) so he killed himself.

The title of this song is written on Ian Curtis's grave.
There was a boy at my university who committed suicide. The very last thing he posted on Facebook, was this song.
He was a friend of one of my closest friends. I didn't know him, but I wished I stopped him. Probably I couldn't have, but still...

Unfortunately when people reach the end and it's on their terms, they can't be stopped, not really. Some will stick around if you can talk them out of it, but ultimately if they want to go, they will try again and again until they succeed.

Some people just feel they need to go and there's nothing that can stop the pain they are in. No matter how hard you try to talk them round, the pain they are in is too much and they just want it to stop and taking their own life is the only way out.

The only thing we can do, is try to help those we know to be feeling like Ian Curtis did, like your friends friend did, try to get them the help they need. That's all we can do.

I went to school with Ian.We played in his house and ours Trinity square and then hurdsfield junior school Macclesfield. Later he went to Kings school and I macclesfield boys school. Didn't see each other for a while.
We played music once in our house but I were more into rock and roll.
Ian was always a quiet laid back kid.
I remember seeing him in centre spread of the new musical express newspaper when I was in Spain.

This happens to me as well. I was so looking forward to seeing Ian and joy division in the us and was certain Philadelphia would have been a stop.
One of the best most progressive radio
Dj's ever, Michael Tearson this during one of his awesome shows, import Export. The 2nd time hearing it, 1980. Then, he announced the tune and the irony of the song, referring to Ian's untimely death. It has haunted me since.
It just sounded like a downer version of Mike Pinder doing a Moody Blues tune.
But what makes me repeatedly play this is my depression and knowing if things get worse, I'll be jamming with him in the great gig in the sky. I'm sad about his passing knowing that I too will be there, jamming with him.
It will happen, but I'm trying not too. The difference- he had epilepsy, I've got Crohn's Disease, diabetes, apnea, and more. He was about to bring this great sound to America.
