Kneel to the Cross
Sol Invictus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sumer is icumen in
Arise! Arise!

Give us our bread and bury our dead
And kneel to the cross on the wall
Whether burnt at the stake or drunk at the wake
Just kneel to the cross on the wall
We've original sin, but we might just get in
If we beg to the cross on the wall
It's love your neighbours and rattle your sabre
Just kneel to that cross on the wall.

See the roof fall, hear the bells crash
As flesh and bone turn to ash
Tried to conquer the sun with a Christian frost
The corpses' stench beneath the cross

Give them gold and they'll save your soul
And kneel to the cross on the wall
Hail to the boss of the great unwashed
And kneel to the cross on the wall
They wail and weep, the march of the sheep
As they go to the cross on the wall

And it's ever so wrong to dare to be strong
So kneel to the cross on the wall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Kneel to the Cross" by Sol Invictus are a scathing critique of the power of organized religion, specifically Christianity, and the ways in which it has been used to control and manipulate people over the centuries. The opening lines, "Sumer is icumen in, Arise! Arise!" are taken from a Middle English song celebrating the arrival of summer, but in this context they take on a more ominous tone, calling on listeners to wake up and realize the dangers of blind adherence to religious authority.

The rest of the lyrics continue in this vein, with the singer urging listeners to "kneel to the cross on the wall" as a way of appeasing the church and avoiding punishment. The paradox of original sin and the possibility of redemption through penance and prayer is highlighted, as is the church's willingness to exploit people's fears and insecurities in order to maintain power. The final lines of the song, "And it's ever so wrong to dare to be strong/So kneel to the cross on the wall," suggest that the only way to truly break free from the church's grip is to reject its authority altogether and find strength within oneself.

Overall, "Kneel to the Cross" is a powerful and thought-provoking critique of religion's role in society, and a reminder that blind obedience and conformity can be dangerous things.

@hagmann65

I couldn't agree with you more! It's not that I don't like Agalloch's cover version but its almost too good if you know what I mean.. The original version sounds more raw. Like people just throwing down their working tools in the field and start singing. With that said both versions are very powerful songs!

@maulros

Its funny how most listeners of this and Agalloch's cover don't say anything about synth at start of cover version. In my opinion it really makes this song work better.

@playmooregames371

I enjoy this version of the song as well as Agalloch's cover

@extremeanalogmusic6296

@BNK2442

@@extremeanalogmusic6296 I miss Agalloch.

@davidandre3719

@@BNK2442 same. Too bad these pussies couldn't handle a stupid joke. So much for black metal musicians being "extreme"

@guyhix1
