Aquellas pequeñas cosas
Sole Giménez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Uno se cree
Que las mato el tiempo
Y la ausencia
Pero su tren vendió folleto
De ida y vuelta

Son aquellas, pequeñas cosas
Que nos dejo un tiempo de rosas
En un rincón
En un papel o en un cajón

Como un ladrón
Te acechan detrás de la puerta
Te tiene tan
A su merced

Como hojas muertas
Que el viento arrastra
Allá o aquí
Que te sonríen tristes
Y no hacen que lloremos cuanto nadie
Nos ve
Oh,oh
Oh, oh

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Sole Giménez's "Aquellas pequeñas cosas" speaks about the passage of time and how we often attribute the demise of things to it. In this case, the singer believed that time and distance had killed or erased memories of the past. However, she soon discovered that certain things are timeless and will never fade. "Su tren vendió folleto de ida y vuelta" informs us that these things are like a trip or a journey, with no particular beginning or end, but with a clear destination.

The second stanza reveals what those things are -- the small but significant moments in life that leave an indelible mark of goodness. They are the "tiempo de rosas," or times of roses, that we encounter but may not always appreciate in their immediacy. Instead, they end up deposited in some corner, on paper or in a drawer. The third stanza compares memories to ghosts that sneak up and haunt us. The image of "hojas muertas que el viento arrastra," or dead leaves being blown around by the wind, suggests that memories of the past often come unbidden, and it can be difficult to prevent them from filling our minds.

The final lines of the third stanza and the fourth stanza explain that even though these memories might make us sad, they also bring a sense of joy and nostalgia. They "sonríen tristes," or smile mournfully at us, but it is this bittersweet quality that makes them so powerful. Even when nobody else is around to witness us cry, these small things from the past can tap into our deepest emotions and evoke tears of sorrow and gratitude.
