Born in Logroño, La Rioja, Spain her father was a Spanish republican, moving to Venezuela with his family when his daughter was still at an early age. In the years that followed, she cooperated with Atahualpa Yupanqui, Violeta Parra, Gilberto Gil and others, having lived and performed in Europe and the Americas. Her repertoire is a vivid mixture of fiery, vivid Caribbean and Latin rhythms, Sephardic elegies and heartwarming ballads.

Me llevan muy obligado.
Las cosas que dejé abiertas
Recójanlas con cuidado.
No les doy explicaciones,
Son cosas muy complicadas.
Me han hablado de la patria,
Le dice a mi vieja, Antonia,
Que no pude despedirme,
Que olvidé la ceremonia de
Darle un beso antes de irme.
Pues voy en primera fila,
Que soy el más ignorante.
Y el jefe quedó en su casa
Pa'reclutar los que falten...
The lyrics to Soledad Bravo's song Uno de Abajo describe a young man who has been conscripted to go to war against his will. He tells his family that he had no choice in the matter and that the situation is complex. The young man is unsure of what he is fighting for and is confused about his duty to the country. He is afraid of the danger ahead and worries about the things he has left unfinished back home.
The young man's biggest regret is that he couldn't say goodbye properly to his mother, Antonia. He forgot to kiss her before leaving, and now he feels guilty. He is going to the frontlines of the war, knowing very little about it, and he is afraid that he will be the first to die. Meanwhile, his commander is sitting comfortably at home, recruiting unsuspecting young men like him.
The song highlights the confusion, fear, and senselessness often associated with war. The singer is a victim of the circumstances, and his situation is portrayed as unjust. The lyrics evoke empathy and understanding for the many young men who were forced to go to war against their will.

Saludos.
