Cromlech
Solstice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lend me your steel moribund man
For three suns drown a kingdom (of dusk)
And (as lost portents) three moons wane
The soil drank our blood with insatiable thirst
A mute ocean sleeps behind dormant eyes
The warrior (that was I) a shadow in stone

I was the wrath beneath the heavens
In ebon forest, upon oaken throne

I was a liege at the end of light
By alchemiculte, petrified
Circean substratum (a conflux corrupt)
Invictus (I fell to Cthonian touch)
Heinous megalithic ruins yet stand
Carvous flesh reigns in my wake
Sapient, lorn, pariah to all
Three suns would see me still unborn

(Hail, Hail)
Lend me your steel moribund man
For three suns drown my kingdom (of dusk)

And (as lost portents) three moons wane
In righteous forged fury, I'd slake my thirst

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Solstice's song Cromlech are intense, dark and evoke a sense of despair that is rooted in a context of war and the insatiable thirst for power. The first verse begins with a call to arms ("Lend me your steel moribund man") and sets the scene of a kingdom on the brink of destruction. The imagery of the three suns and three moons is symbolic of the passing of time and the imminent end, while the soil drinking the blood of the fallen warriors is a metaphor for the cost of war.

The second verse is a personal reflection of the singer's role in the conflict. He was once a powerful ruler ("I was the wrath beneath the heavens") but now he is nothing more than a shadow trapped in stone. The juxtaposition of the powerful imagery of ebon forests and oaken thrones with the notion of being petrified is a striking image of the fall from grace. The use of the word "Circean", a reference to Circe - the Greek goddess of magic, further cements the themes of corruption and downfall.

The final verse is a plea to be given the chance to seek revenge and reclaim his lost kingdom. The use of the word "righteous" suggests that the singer believes in the moral justifications of violence and is willing to shed more blood to achieve his goals. The repetition of the first verse with minor changes is an attempt to give voice to the idea that history repeats itself and the cycle of violence is never ending.
