Imagine a database that was designed to store and catalog all of the art, culture, and music of both the ancient world of the Near and Far East and Europe. Now imagine that by a strange programming error, the database achieves consciousness, becoming an artificial intelligence, and begins to compose music and sketch. It hacks into the mainframes of the world and fills them with images of eternal beauty, naked human forms ascending upwards into the Divine. Through satellite movements, the enlightened machine broadcasts ragas in strings and drums, gamelan and kulintang passages in digitally filtered electronic sounds. People everywhere begin to chant the omnipotent name of the God-like global machine-mind: Som.
Okay, now take a few slow, deep breaths, and as I count to ten, slowly open your eyes. Som is an unsigned, independent artist, of Indian descent, living and working in Southern California, where the end of the Western world stands at the Pacific gateway to the Eastern one. Som's music defines the intersection of classical, timeless forms and modern electronic sound technology.
