Tomorrow
Somerville Jimmy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like the knife of a thief that's held close to the throat
I'm threatened by you and the cruel way you gloat
You once turned me on, now all it seems so remote
You broke me in pieces, you cherished each blow;
The harder you hit me, the stronger I grow
I'll leave you tomorrow, take my pride and I'll go

You may break the skin but you can't kill the soul
I've had all I can take
I'm leaving tomorrow
I'm leaving tomorrow
I'm leaving, I've had all I can take

Don't tell me you love me, your tears are too late
Your trap was deception, and I took the bait
The animal in you, you can't keep at bay
I'm not your possession to treat as you wish
Your silence will slowly destroy you each day
I'm leaving tomorrow, my love for life is great

You may break the skin but you can't kill the soul
I've had all I can take
I've had all I can take
I've had all I can take
I've had all I can take

I'm leaving tomorrow
I'm leaving tomorrow
I'm leaving, yes I'm leaving

You broke me in pieces, you cherished each blow;
The harder you hit me, the stronger I grow

I'll leave you tomorrow, take my pride and I'll go
I'm leaving tomorrow

Overall Meaning

The song "Tomorrow" by Somerville Jimmy is a powerful anthem of standing up to an abusive partner and finding the courage to leave. The lyrics describe the pain and brutality of being in a relationship with someone who takes pleasure in hurting their partner. The first verse compares the threat posed by the abusive partner to a sharp knife held to the throat, highlighting the danger and fear felt by the victim. The second verse portrays the attempt by the abusive partner to manipulate and control their victim with false declarations of love and insincere tears, but the victim sees through these tactics and recognizes the trap for what it is. The chorus repeats the refrain of leaving tomorrow, emphasizing the determination to break free from the abuser and start a new life. The final verse speaks to the resilience and strength of the victim, who has grown stronger with each blow inflicted by their abuser and will not be held captive any longer.

The lyrics of "Tomorrow" are both heartbreaking and empowering, giving voice to those who have suffered at the hands of an abusive partner and inspiring them to find the strength to leave. The song is a reminder that no one deserves to be treated with cruelty and that it is never too late to seek help and escape from an abusive situation.

A terrific song, still as relevant as ever, domestic abuse during covid etc,
The song is both tragic, yet uplifting simultaneously, which is a very rare thing in music.
Love the Bronski Beat infused Alphaville, 1984, Japanese synth style keyboard sounds.
This is a superb record. The graphics, the video visuals is at least 8 years ahead of it's time. Remember, this song is a 1987 production. Magnificent.
