Last Song
Somi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If this were my last song
Would you listen closer?
If this were my last song
Would you lean in?
If this were my last song
Would you hum along?
If this were my last song
Would you try to remember everything?

The shape of my neck, everything
The size of my breasts, everything

The things you dislike, everything
My ego, my pride, everything
The sound of my scream, everything
The breath in between everything
The first song before everything

If this were my last song
I might just sing louder
If this were my last song
I would ask the band to slow it down
If this were my last song
We'd sing harmonies
If this were my last song
I would try to tell you everything

The times that I lied, everything
The days that I cried, everything
The lovers I knew, everything
My hungry nights too, everything
My grandmothers brave, everything
The last time I prayed, everything
The first song before everything

If this were my last song
If this were my last song
I'd thank the room,
The air and hearts around me

I'd breathe deeper and deeper
And hold the notes for a while

Overall Meaning

The song "Last Song" by Somi seems to be a reflection on the singer's mortality and how she would want to be remembered if this was the last time she was able to perform. In the chorus, Somi asks whether her audience would listen closer, lean in, hum along and try to remember everything if this were her last song. She goes on to list a range of things she would like people to remember her by, even the things that people may dislike about her, such as her ego, her pride or the sound of her screams.

The second verse of the song describes how Somi would feel if this was her last performance. She would sing louder, ask the band to slow it down, and sing harmonies. She would try to tell her audience everything, including the times she lied, the days she cried, the people she loved and the moments that made her feel alive. The final chorus suggests that if this were her last song, Somi would be thankful and grateful for the people and the air around her, and would breathe deeply and hold the notes for as long as possible.

Overall, the song seems to be an introspective reflection on what matters most to Somi and how she would like to be remembered. It is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.

I discovered Somi 38,000 feet above sea level somewhere in the African skies. As her songs played on through the head phones carefully tucked in my ears, I had this goofy smile playing around my lips. I was certain other travelers were wondering why I was smiling so sheepishly. Ah! Heaven never felt closer!!
