His debut recording, At War With Walls and Mazes (2008), earned him the title of "Best New Artist" by NPR's All Songs Considered. Lott has built an impressive list of collaborators including everyone from indie-rock darlings such as Sufjan Stevens, Peter Silberman (The Antlers), These New Puritans, My Brightest Diamond; to composers and classical world institutions such as Nico Muhly, Richard Perry (Arcade Fire), Judd Greenstein, yMusic, ETHEL, and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw; to rappers Serengeti, Busdriver and Beans (Antipop Consortium).
As a composer Ryan has scored films such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which he was nominate for an Academy Award, and commercials for a long and impressive list of clients such as Absolut, IKEA, Coca-Cola, Audi and many others. Production credits include arranging and programming for four major feature films, most notably Looper (2012), plus his score for the Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2013). In addition to his commissioned work, the Son Lux catalog has been licensed for both film (The Romantics, Looper) and television (Parks and Recreation, American Horror Story).
Son Lux has performed at Carnegie Hall with the Young People's Choir of New York, held a weeklong residency at the Joyce Theater with Stephen Petronio Dance Company, performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and has shared the stage with Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Kate Davis, and Dose One.

It could be about an interracial relationship, but I don’t necessarily think it has to be. It’s kind of sad in a way that we think anytime we see a black performer it has to be about racism. Yes, racism is still a massive part of the world we live in unfortunately, but I think it’s silly to think we should basically only give roles to black people when the story is about being black. It could just be a couple going through 'couple issues'.
I think it’s about a new relationship where the woman (in the music video but could be anyone really) is scared to go into a new relationship, seemingly because she’s had bad experiences in the past/has trust issues.

Maybe this could be talking about the beginning of a relationship. When you have trauma, there's this continuous feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop. (I feel like that's further referenced in the line "You hear the earth around you speak in tongues")

Trusting people is incredibly difficult, especially if you've had a lot of people around you that you could never trust. She could be worrying about the unknown. Maybe this person could be like the other ones --or worse, but in reality, she’s running away from the idea that it’s possible for someone to love her tenderly. She’s probably even worried that this new relationship will be as damaging as the last - hence why she’s scared of loving again (starting again).

There’s a potential for this relationship to be great but she’s scared to put that faith in someone again.
Ultimately, I think becoming "undone" is about relationships falling apart and an inability to navigate through the world without chaos. Yes, horrible relationships in general make us more cynical -- for our own protection. But at the heart of it all, we have to be able to disconnect each relationship from the last. You shouldn’t ignore red flags, but you should know that the only way to have a successful relationship is by going out on a limb and trusting someone. And always knowing that even if something goes wrong, you did your best and you can pick yourself up again.
Sometimes our faith in people is broken by terrible relationships, but ultimately we must believe that not all people are abusive/awful. If we don’t come to realize that, everything comes undone as we can’t possibly survive in our very social world being completely untrusting of others. I've had plenty of experiences where me assuming bad intentions out of others have totally destroyed my relationship with them.
Like in the second verse, it’s hard to believe you can 'start again' and trust in the goodwill of others. But ultimately, we must, otherwise we’ll become cynical/jaded and thus our world comes “undone”.
