The band's influences are varied and go from James Taylor to Rubén Blades, as well as The Beatles, Silvio Rodríguez and Caetano Veloso.
In 1996, Son Miserables signed a record deal with Kiwi Records, for the recording of their first album, a self-titled record, at Origen Studios, in Panama City. «Son Miserables» was realeased into the Panamanian market on November 1st, 1996, and ranked among the best-selling albums in local stores, and one of the most requested in local radio stations.
Son Miserables have shared the stage with Rubén Blades, both in Panamá and Puerto Rico, as part of Blades' tour «La Rosa de los Vientos». Later, they recorded a duet with Blades entitled «No te miento» (Son Miserables) that was included in «Red, Hot & Latin», an album whose sales were destined for the fight against AIDS.
In 1998, Son Miserables started working on their second album, this time with the collaboration of John Karpowich, who has worked with Santana, Ricky Martin, Seal and Yes. The second album included 13 tracks that continued Son Miserables' simple, narrative style, but with a more elaborate production. The album was released in 1999, and included popular singles such as «Marchita la flor», «La solución» and «Solo las estrellas bastarán».
In November 2003, the band announced their dissolution and gave a last official performance at the 2003 PanamaRock Awards in Panama City.

The lyrics of Son Miserables's song Mirame reflect the feelings of a person who has lost someone they love. The silence around them, where once there was noise, and the emptiness in their world symbolize their sense of loss. The singer notes that for the first time in a long while, they have time on their hands, but having the person they lost with them does not feel the same because they cannot breathe the same air. They are alive but without that special somebody. The chorus invites the person they have lost to look at them and tell them if they still carry the music within them, the music that once brought them together, and if they are still their guiding wind. They also ask for the courage to hear the truthful answer, and though they know it will make them cry, for now, they just ask to be looked at again.
The second stanza speaks of the little reminders of the person they lost everywhere. The wedding photo sitting on the piano and the empty apartment in the building with just memories reveal a love that has gone cold. The words of war uttered between them now seem to reach their goal as the broken heart must resign to what has been chosen. The chorus repeats, with the same plea to look at them and provide the answers they need. The final stanza speaks of the end of an era, with the house they built being sold and someone else moving in, and the distance between them growing more considerable. The singer also notes the arrival of winter, earlier than expected, and how they struggle to make sense of the fact that things that start may undoubtedly end. However, they continue to be alive without the person they love.
