End Of The World
Sonia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cos you don't love me any more

Oh, why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does
Oh, why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said...goodbye

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Sonia's song "End Of The World" express a sense of disbelief and confusion at the world's continued existence in the absence of love. The repeated question "why" highlights the singer's search for meaning and understanding in a world that no longer makes sense to her. The reference to the sun and sea, natural phenomena that are typically associated with life and vitality, underscore the singer's feelings of despair and hopelessness. The chorus further emphasizes the finality of the situation, asserting that the world as the singer knew it has come to an end now that she has lost the love of her life.

How stuck can someone be in their nostalgia bias to not feel the lushness of emotion in Sonia's version of this song ??

Sonia's version gives the song a beautiful lush treatment in terms of music production and her vocals ...... its something that the older versions lack, its a modern and wonderful re-imagination of the song ...

The musch older versions with Skeeter Davis and Brenda Lee's singing were more suited to the older generation's style of intonations, while they were strong vocals, they were more targeted at that certain mid western culture ...

In terms of singing, Sonia has an amazing unique ability to draw out her vocals to evoke a melancholic emotion of longing which elevates the song to an ethereal and elegant realm ...

Sonia's vocals are as powerful as Skeeter Davis and Brenda Lee's, they are just strong in their own unique ways .....

By the way, I'm not even a fan of Sonia's ... I have not even listened to another song of hers aside from this ... but I intend to ...

Sonia has an amazing, very underrated voice. Such power. But beautiful softness to her voice too. And visually I find her quite captivating. I've seen her live last December at the Christmas switch on and she was amazing. The crowd knew all her songs. She looked fab. Love her and Kylie too. And Jason, and Rick and all the other SAW acts. Hazel Dean whose leaving who?

The music, the ambience it creates, and the magical voice of the singer make this version as the best one.

This is the best version of this classic song. Sonia's voice is amazing here. I can't hear this song sung by anybody else than her now. Even the instrumentation by Stock/Aitken/Waterman is very classy. Nice music video too. Very moving song in all aspects.
