The pair first achieved fame with two hit songs in 1965, "Baby Don't Go" and "I Got You Babe". "I Got You Babe" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became, according to AllMusic's Bruce Eder, "one of the biggest-selling and most beloved pop/rock hits of the mid-'60s"; Rolling Stone magazine listed it among "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2003.
Signing with Atco/Atlantic Records, they released three studio albums in the late 1960s, as well as the soundtrack recordings for two unsuccessful movies, Good Times and Chastity, with Cher contributing vocals to one cut, "Chastity's Song (Band of Thieves)". In 1972, after three years of silence, the couple returned to the studio and released two other albums under the MCA/Kapp Records label.
In the 1970s, they also positioned themselves as media personalities with two top ten TV shows in the US, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny and Cher Show. The couple's career as a duo ended in 1975 following their divorce. In the decade they spent together, Sonny and Cher were nominated for two Grammy Awards and sold over 40 million records worldwide.
Author Joseph Murrells described Sonny & Cher as "part of the leading exponents of the rock-folk-message type of song, a hybrid combining the best and instrumentation of rock music with folk lyric and often lyrics of protest." Rolling Stone magazine ranked them No. 18 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time.
Performing under her first name, Cher went on to a highly successful career as a solo singer and actress, while Sonny Bono was eventually elected to Congress as a Republican U.S. Representative from California. The two performers were inducted to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998, following Sonny's death in a skiing accident.

I Walk On Guilded Splinters
Sonny & Cher Lyrics

WRITERS MALCOLM JOHN REBBENNACK JR aka DOCTOR JOHN
Some people think they jive me, but I know they must be crazy
Je suie le grand zombie
With my yellow chaffen of choisen
Ain't afraid of no tomcat and gonna fill my guts with poison
I walk through the fire
And I'll fly through the smoke
I wanna see my enemies
On the end of my rope
Walk on pins and needles
And I see what they can do
Walk on guilded splinters
With the King of the Zulu
[Chorus:]
Come to me, get it, come, come
Walk on guilded splinters
Come to me, get it, come, come
Walk on guilded splinters
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
Till I burn up
When I roll out in my coffin
Drink poison in my chalice
Pride begins to fade
And you all feel my malice
I put gris-gris on your doorstep
So soon you be in the gutter
I'll make your heart melt like butter
I say I can make you stutter
[Chorus x3]
The lyrics of Sonny & Cher's song "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" paint a vivid picture of a powerful figure. The singer of the song is a zombie king, unafraid of anything, not even death. The first verse reveals the singer's confidence in knowing that others are underestimating him. The second verse highlights the singer's fearlessness as they walk through the fire and smoke. There is a sense of power and control as the singer wants to see their enemies at the end of their rope. The chorus repeats the command to "Come to me" as the king walks on "guilded splinters."
The song's lyrics are both eerie and haunting, creating a sense of unease in the listener. The lines "Drink poison in my chalice" and "I put gris-gris on your doorstep" evoke images of dark magic and voodoo. The singer's threats to make their enemies "stutter" and be "in the gutter" add to the ominous tone. Overall, the lyrics suggest a dark and mystical power that is both alluring and dangerous.
