A World Of Our Own
Sonny James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close the door, light the light, we're stayin' home tonight
Far away from the bustle and the bright city lights
Let them all fade away, just leave us alone
And we'll live in a world of our own

We'll build a world of our own that no one else can share
All our sorrows we'll leave far behind us there
And I know you will find there'll be peace of mind
When we live in a world of our own
Oh my love, oh my love, I've cried for you so much
Lonely nights without sleeping while I longed for your touch
Now your lips can't evade the heartache I've known
Come with me to a world of our own

We'll build a world of our own that no one else can share
All our sorrows we'll leave far behind us there
And I know you will find there'll be peace of mind
When we live in a world of our own
Oh my love, oh my love, I've cried for you so much
Lonely nights without sleeping while I longed for your touch
Now your lips can't evade the heartache I've known
Come with me to a world of our own

We'll build a world of our own that no one else can share
All our sorrows we'll leave far behind us there
And I know you will find there'll be peace of mind
When we live in a world of our own
Oh my love, oh my love, I've cried for you so much
Lonely nights without sleeping while I longed for your touch
Now your lips can't evade the heartache I've known
Come with me to a world of our own

And I know you will find there'll be peace of mind
When we live in a world of our own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sonny James's song "A World of Our Own" express the desire to escape from the pressures of the outside world and build a safe haven with a loved one. The first verse urges the listener to close the door and turn on the lights, disconnecting from the noise and commotion of city life. The second verse begins with the admission that the singer has been crying for their loved one and longing for their touch, leading to a declaration to build a world where they can be together without interference from the outside world. The emphasis on leaving sorrows behind and finding peace of mind implies that the world beyond their own is responsible for the pain they have experienced.

The repetition of the chorus reinforces the desire to create a completely separate, private world where the lovers can be alone with their emotions. The song carries a powerful romantic message of the need for a separate space in which to nurture love and intimacy, away from the societal stresses and pressures. "A World of Our Own" resonated with audiences and remains a classic of the 1960s.

CHILLINGLY beautiful!
His knack for covering hit pop
tunes and giving them a country twist
and making even LARGER hits out of
them was
unprecedented. A pity that men of his
talent and high standing cannot live
a couple of hundred years! (I just
wish that the choir
had been featured throughout this masterpiece.)
If Frank Sinatra had
possessed a voice
one half as gorgeous
and spectacular as this, I would have bought all of his records!

It's sad they don't have good music like this now....

Yep! They don't make country music like this anymore. It's sad they don't have country music anymore on the radio

I've been listening to this song for 48 years. Isn't it amazing how one man with superb vocal talent playing a guitar lightening fast, and a small group of harmony singers, a bass and and an organ can make a song sound so good? This is the good stuff. Thanks

Another #1 hit on the Country & Western charts by The Southern Gentleman. It was also the 135th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. And it was neck & neck between Sonny James and Buck Owens for dominance on the Country Music scene.

Both one of the greatest country singers and one of the greatest guitar pickers to ever live. Found out one thing he did to make his guitar sound even better. This was told me as the truth. Right before a recording session, he'd put on a new set of Black Diamond silver plated strings. Don't know if the still make them or not; haven't seen a set in years. They sounded great new,but were soft and would wear out very quickly. His "secret" was told me by someone who said he knew him well.

RIP Sonny....in the sixties he rivaled Buck Owens for consecutive NUMBER ONE records.....He had 16 # 1 hits and altogether 24 number one songs on the Billboard Charts....Great talent, humble man.

NO ONE was ever more talented than Sonny James. He was amazing in every area....and a great person as well.

was really singing from the mountaintop on this one.😃 Throw roses on the stage for one
of the greatest country music superstars that
ever lived!
